Purely for speculation purposes. What if the Jets missed the playoffs and won the NHL Lottery...

Who do you think the Winnipeg Jets would select? Why?
Would that player be sent back to Juniors? If so how long?
How would that draft choice affect others players?
Who would be a casualty of that draft choice?
How would that player affect the future of the team?
Would they be a perennial playoff team?

In my opinion if the Jets won the NHL lottery they would take Seth Jones. They would choose him due to the lack of skilled depth on the blue line. Yes we have Buff/Enstrom/Bogosian who are top 4 defensemen.

I believe that if we got Seth Jones he WOULD get sent back to juniors. The length of time would be 1 full year. The reasoning behind that would be that it would allow Winnipeg to influx BOTH Jones and Trouba on the point and give Winnipeg 6 SOLID defensemen and create a HUGE buzz of excitement in Winnipeg. Kane/Bogosian/Burmistrov/Scheifele all will be a year older and closer to their PRIME and Winnipeg would COMPETE for top spot in the division.

Players affected with this selection would be the future of Postma and Redmond as they would be moved down in the depth list and with a defense of Buff/Enstrom/Bogosian/Jones/Trouba/Stuart would give Winnipeg 2 offense specialist dmen, 2 two way dmen and 2 defensive specialist dmen.

The biggest casuality of the Jets winning the lottery would be Ron Hainsey. If Winnipeg were to select Seth Jones, Ron Hainsey who was signed to a long term deal based on having one very good season has been a disappointment in my opinion and does not possess above average skills defensively or offensively.

With Seth Jones on the team, Winnipeg would be competing for division champions with the Edmonton Oilers and Vancouver Canucks. The focus would shift to the play of Pavelec. I believe that 6 solid defensemen would make Pavelec look a lot better. Too many of the goals Pavelec let in were on plays where Pavelec making a save would be very difficult. This is as a result of deflections, 2 on ones and Pavelec making a big save and another player not covered and they get an easy goal.

What is your opinion?

I have to go with Drouin or MacKinnon.

Both are NHL ready. Both have star potential on a team that has lots of 2nd-4th line depth but only one true star in Kane.

We need someone that can skate with Kane, drive to the net for rebounds, improve the cycle game, improve the PP, match up with the best centers in the league, on and on..

I just think defenseman are so so hard to project and take so long to develop that there is better value for us to take the elite center.

We are not going to be competing with Edmonton and Vancouver for division
champions as we will not be in the same division as them.

Jones is good but we have Trouba coming up. We need some quality forwards.
I would rather go for Valeri Nichushkin, Jonathan Drouin or possibly Nathan MacKinnon

The key is to be in top 4 in the draft this year to get anyone of the big 4.

If we are going to speculate.....lets pretend we traded Hainsey for Florida's 1st round pick....We win the Cup and their/our pick wins the lottery.....If we are going to use our imaginations lets really use it :D

P.S. Mackinnon because out top level talent at forward sucks

If were really going to speculate it would be Valeri Nichushkin as he ranked #2 Overall
and is 6'4 as opposed to MacKinnon who is 6 feet and Drouin is 5'10.

Nichushkin is a big centre that fits the True North mold of big players. He is the
tallest forward and second tallest in the top 30 rankings.

I think we should trade Wellwood for all of the ping pong balls in the Draft Lottery. Then we are sure to get the #1 pick.

if were staying in pretend..er.. "speculation" land i prefer the jets made the playoffs, shipped some depth player and a second for a bubble teams first, and then won the lottery.

Definitly would prefer a forward drafted. unlike previous years, it doesn't seem like Jones is the concensus, surefire number one, there seems to have been a lot of back and forth- so i would feel find with takin gone of the top forwards...or you know, taking jones.

I'd be completely on board with this as well. It might big a lot of people if he doesn't come over to NA until he is 21 though.

Zachary Fucale - top rated goalie :)

actually i'd like us to get a forward. I seem to recall reading that drafting a defenseman is a higher risk than drafting a forward (in terms of how good they eventually become). Given that, I'd like to see MacKinnon, Drouin or Barkov, in that order.

No Never.

If you recall dmen being a higher risk, you should know that goalies are the biggest risk. I would prefer we never ever took a goalie in the first round unless he was as hailed as carey price (which zach fucale is most definitly not)

I'd be fine witha ny of the three forwards, and/or jones, but if we win the lottery, zach fucale should be the last hting were looking at.

I'm worried about our forward depth far more than our defensive depth. Grab MacKinnon/Drouin. While we're dreaming, I'd also like a pony.

It's a toughy. Seth Jones may be the biggest impact player long-term in the draft, but he doesn't currently fill our biggest need of a solid #1 C. (sorry Scheif, Burmi and Little). We are solid on the D with 4 bona fide top 4 Defencemen in the system long term. (Buff, Toby, Bogo, Trouba)

Like many others here, I'd like to see Mackinnon, Drouin, Nichushkin or Barkov.

As for the rest of your questions, I think it will be status quo for how long they stay in Junior. Bring them to camp, have them stay when they're ready.

This decision would affect Little, as he'd be moved to the right wing. Scheif and Burmi would be effectively stuck as our 2/3 centres, unless we move one of them.

If your not drafting Seth Jones, you should trade the 1st overall pick. You build your franchise around a player like Jones. Hard to say the same about Mackinnon or Drouin. Great players, but not guaranteed superstars, IMO.

The 1st overall pick is probably worth more now than it was last year, maybe even in 2011 too. It could bring in a good package to compliment our young core.

Nichushkin is a winger thats under contract in the KHL until he's 21. If we use a top 10 pick on him I'll be pissed. I like Jones, Mackinnon, Drouin, Barkov and Lindholm over him disregarding his contract status/Russian factor

He is listed as a centre according ISS draft rankings.
I'm not worried if he comes at 21. Very very rare 19 and 20 year olds step into the
NHL and turn around a franchise in their first couple of years.

Barkov is Russian as well. He has Russian citizenship and is the son Alex Barkov Sr.

Not to long ago, comparisons were being drawn between MacKinnon and Sid the Kid. If we have an opportunity to get him....I think you have to take it.

I think Seth Jones is built more along the lines of Jack Johnson...that's just what I've heard.

If we draft a Defenseman with a high pick....I'll be ****ing pissed. Our top four D is good in the years going forward, we really need a forward. A centre to be exact.

He's a LW. I don't think he's played center for a while. Didn't play it in the world juniors or the KHL/VHL this year. The question is not if he'll come over at 21, the question is if he'll come over at all.

Barkov is a Finn with duel citizenship. He was born and grew up in Finland. He played internationally for Finland.

Take whomever the scouting staff feel will be the best player, whether it's a forward or a defenseman.

If the staff feel like Jones is the #1 pick, then take Jones. If he and Trouba are ready to play in the NHL next year, make other moves to compensate (Postma, Hainsey (most likely already gone), possibly Redmond and Stuart as well). Once Bogo, Trouba, and Jones are ready to take heavy minutes, make a decision on Enstrom and Buff as well.

Or, if the Staff feel one of Drouin, Macinnon, or Barkov will be the best player, than go that route. I wouldn't be upset with any of these 3, but if the staff felt that Jones was the best, I wouldn't be happy with taking a forward "just because".

As an aside, I don't see as much press for Barkov on our forum. I wouldn't be upset in the least if TNSE thought he was going to be the best player. What he's doing in the FEL is special.

Elite prospects has him as a LW. Hockeydb has him as a LW. Button has him as a LW. Wikipedia has him as a LW. The KHL site has him as a LW. I've personally watched him play around 10 times, and he's a LW.

Cut the [mod] Nationality crap, take the best player at the position you need.

Considering the emergence of the KHL it would be pretty foolish to not weigh the chance of a player wanting to stay in his home country and play into your selections.

I don't think those comparisons would have been made if MacKinnon wasn't from Cole Harbour.

Button has dropped MacKinnion to 3rd in his latest rankings.
