What are the chances of Mark Stone making Ottawa out of training camp?

I when the Sens get pushed around and Neil ain't out there, then what? Zigi fights to protect Lazar???

What do other teams do when their tough guy isn't on the ice, and one of their young guys gets pushed around?

If someone nails Lazar, then send out Neil and say " go nail their your star when his heads down" and tell cowen to ragdoll any skilled player who goes near our goalie.

Its not like other teams have 8 Chris Neils. Because if they did, we'd make the playoffs.

He was referring to if Niel was a healthy scratch. The situation you described is exactly why he wouldn't be scratched

I'd love to think Lazar and Stone both make the team, or at the very least Stone, but on a team that seriously considers promoting its worst player to captain (ie; Phillips), anything is possible.

Neil shouldn't be a regular player

You want team toughness; if someone runs roughshod over Mark Stone the whole team needs to step up, not an over-the-hill useless Neil

If Ryan stays he might just aswell play on the first line with Turris and Mac.

Then have Stone and Michalek winging for Zib.

Will be interesting to see what happens because if Lazar makes the team, we have Ryan/Lazar/Chiasson/Stone/Condra/Neil all on RW.

That's 2 extra RWs. Unless one of them plays LW and the other sits (Neil :crossfing), IDK what happens.

If Lazar is good enough to make the team, then Condra will be gone. However, I think he should get maybe 9 games, if ready, and then be sent back to junior where he would probably dominate and lead Team Canada Juniors. After that, Condra's contract is up and room is available on the 23 man roster.

Why can't other big guys do something? Why cant 18 skaters do something? If we want to be a good team we can't have Chris Neil skating in cement, handling a hot potato out there for us. He can't even lay people out anymore because he's too slow. What was his last big hit? Boyle in the playoffs? Boychuk a couple years ago?

As for stone, I don't see how he doesn't make the team. Well I guess that goes back to Neil. Maybe we won't have room for stone because Neil is taking a spot. But when it comes to if stone is in the top 12 forwards in our organization. Yes. He definitely is.

Enforcers around the league haven't been "protecting" anyone for nearly a decade now. Just a sideshow these days.

As for Stone, where has he been this summer? Training-wise, I mean. Has he been working out with a specialist to continue working on his skating? Has he been in Ottawa working with some of the guys on the team?

I bet the Canucks could have used a thug when they were humiliated by the Bruins in the final.

A guy like prime Neil is what an enforcer should be these days, a tough SOB who can play, even if its in a limited role.

Moving forward enforcers are guys who would make a team regardless of toughness and that could actually shoot and pass and skate with toughness being a bonus. So not Neil. The fighting should be split amongst the big gritty players as there won't be many/any heavyweight goons anymore. Look to guys like cowen, smith, greening, gryba, etc to drop em a couple times a season when need be. It should be done by comittee.

I read like a month ago Stone was training hard and he thinks he can become a game breaking winger

Sounds good....but I hope some of that hard training is continuing to work on his skating. While it has improved over the years, it still needs work. If he gets that first couple of strides up to par, he would be a lock for the team.

He's already a lock. Or should be.

Both Stone and Lazar are going to have to kick down the door with their performance if they want to stay, just because of the numbers. They know this, so does the team, it's an excellent situation to have competition from hungry young players.

Instead of whining because other contracts are blocking them, let's hope they make it impossible to send them elsewhere, show me says Dorion.

It's the best situation to have. The Sens will make all the room necessary on the team if they deserve it. I'm looking forward to it.

I'm worried Ottawa is too cheap to put condra,Neil,Phillips on waivers (and risk paying their nhl salaries in the ahl)if young guys out perform them. In which case whining would be warranted.

Edit: I should use "when" not "if"

Let's worry when it actually happens, not before. Kicking down the door means there is no room for doubt, their performance is far superior. If the performance is close, you always go with the veteran, it's worked that way in the NHL for a long time. It works that way even if fans don't like the veterans and want to see the shiny new stuff. It's up to the kids, if they show the right stuff the Sens will make room, anyway they can.

There is no room for doubt that Hoffman and stone are better at hockey than Chris Neil. We've already seen it with our own eyes in NHL action. They can actually pass the puck, receive passes, Shoot, Make plays. Chris Neil cannot. He fumbles easy passes while not being able to make a lead tape to tape pass to safe his life.

I can see stone or Hoffman buzzing all camp, and get points and help the team win some exhibition games while Neil will skate around in molasses while doing nothing and fighting a young guy trying to make the other team. Yet Chris Neils job will be safe.

And before someone says "its exhibition and Chris Neil isn't trying" Chris Neil sucked all last year too so that excuse goes out the window.

Some people just aren't fighters. Its easy to say that everyone over 6 feet in the NHL should be willing to throw punches, but some people just aren't designed that way. If it were as easy as that, every big guy in the league would be willing to drop the mitts at any given time.

Being willing to fight, and being good at it is a skill. Neil has it, others don't. I think you're being to hard on Neil anyway, in his prime he was a great third line player, now he's a 4th liner that can still get it done. The guy had 8 goals last year, its not like he's useless.

But Chris Neil gives the team momentum when he gets his face filled in :sarcasm:

Having guys like fisher at 3c for so long, and havlat at 3rw for long has probably raised my standards, but I never considered Neil a great third liner.

In Neils prime he was our 4th line right winger behind alfredsson, hossa, and havlat. Then he got worse and worse while moving up the lineup. Of course there's bitterness.

If he was on our 4th line then, and this past year was 3rd line while being a quarter of his primes effectiveness, what the hell are we doing with this organization?
