Just post better
Posting this just in deference to Wennberg, since I posted the Wilson hit. This is not any sort of suggestion this is what we'll be missing, just his last hurrah.
I think it is a mistake. I always think buyouts are a mistake. I didn’t like buying out Hartnell or Tyutin. You have to look at the bigger picture than just one contract.
If I am another GM, I’d be pointing out which teams use buyouts when talking to free agents. I’d question the loyalty of Columbus management, and I’d point out that if you take a cheap shot and get a bad concussion, Columbus will use any means necessary to get rid of your contract. I’d be using it if I was trying to offer sheet PLD. Sign a contract with us because we treat players better than Columbus.
Wennberg is overpaid, but $2 million overpaid, not $4 or $5 million overpaid. Jones is $3.5 million underpaid. Some guys are underpaid and some guys are overpaid. It is what it is. You hope in balance your team does not consistently overpay like Toronto.
I hope he goes to the western conference, and I hope he wins a cup.
I called this 3 years ago when I pointed out how the league had figured out he was a one trick pony

The NFL has non-guaranteed contracts and they cut people all the time. Doesn't seem to change anything in regards to free agent signings there.
Wennberg's version of a hat trick was scoring three goals in a season.Just a quick question. What's Wennberg all about? Is he a solid 3C? Is he good defensively? What's his playstyle like? I'm just curious.
Everybody does in it the NFL. Not everyone does it in the NHL. And certain teams do it way more often than the others.
I looked at all buyouts since 2014 on Cap Friendly Buyout History - CapFriendly - NHL Salary Caps
25 teams have made 84 buyouts.
Chicago, Washington, St. Louis, the Islanders, and Vegas haven’t bought anyone out. Vegas is a new team, so it makes sense they haven’t. Some teams have done a lot of buy outs. Calgary and Nashville lead the way with 6 buy outs, the Devils and the Rangers have had 5 buy outs, and Columbus, Detroit, Edmonton, and Florida have 4.
Maybe less attractive Canadian cities like the Calgary and Edmonton plus non traditional hockey markets like a Columbus, Florida, and Nashville are forced to overpay, and thus more apt to use buyouts. But Winnipeg has only done 1 buyout. St. Louis hasn’t done any.
I stand by what I said early. And if I were an agent, I would advise my clients to especially avoid Calgary and Nashville.
BTW, the Columbus buyouts are Wennberg, Tyutin, Hartnell, and Boll.
I see what you're saying. I don't think it's really a big deal. I mean, Tyutin and Boll are back with the organization, after all.
We all thought after his 59 point third season that we finally had our 1C for the next decade and could go work on another part of the team.
I was with you in that I never saw him as a 1C.....but I never saw him take a plunge to the depths he fell.Speak for yourself.
Most of the people who felt that way and were vocal about it don’t even admit it.
They say that they thought he could be the 1C not that he was.
I was being nice. I deleted my original postI get people didn't like him, and there's valid reasons not to, but jesus christ the way people talk about him in this thread is so petty and ridiculous. You guys are acting like he didn't try.
Regardless, its the right move. It made way too much sense financially and going forward for both parties. I think he'd fit perfectly on a team with zero expectations as their 3rd line center. I hope he rekindles the offensive potentially he has while maintaining his smart defensive play. More than likely though, he'll just be a defensive specialist making around 2 million per season. And that's okay.
Thanks for your contributions and good luck Wenny. Although he is my username, he was never my favorite player. I thought he would be, which is why I picked it, but it never came to be. With that said, I did appreciate his style of play from time to time, and kept the name because there was really no reason to change it. But, now there is. New username inbound...
