Montreal has been rumored to be targeting him for years. He's currently a UFA with a modified NTC (can submit 12 teams he won't go to). Montreal may very well be one of those teams... but previous rumors suggest he has family there, suggesting he wouldn't rule it out. Montreal has had some failed attempts at their RW prospects as of late... including Scherbak, McCarron, Hudon to a degree. Simmonds would fill a hole if he could be resigned. What would it take?

Have to consider it starts with their 2019 1st. Kotkaniemi and Suzuki out of the picture. Poehling probably discussion worthy.

The Habs are not trading their 2019 1st rd pick for a 30 yr old.

If Simmonds is traded, it will be for a first rd pick and a prospect. If Hextall was going to trade Simmer, it would be at the deadline and depends on where PHI is at that time.

The 1st + prospect isn’t certain but if the 1st

1-12: obviously no +

13-20: smaller +, maybe a project prospect

21+: smaller upside A prospect.

This range doesn’t mean anything, just using an example.

My guess is that a 1st and RHD prospect are targeted.

Winger/Center prospects flyers have: Frost, Vorobyev (Predominant C), Nicolas Aube-Kubel, Carsten Twarynski, Tanner Laczynski, Farabee, Allison, Ratcliffe, Rubtsov (C/W), and O’Brien (C/W) who all have pretty good upside as a group. That also doesn’t mention Konecny and Lindblom who are NHL level youngsters. Don’t really need wingers or centers

That would be one of the dumbest decisions of the Bergevin era and that's saying something

I think that ship has sailed. Montreal is moving away from bigger, older more expensive players. They are going all young, fast hard working guys.

If Simmonds is traded, it will be under the assumption that they will not make the playoffs. Also likely, that in this situation they don't intend to resign him.

At the TDL, he is worth at most a late 1st, or a 2nd + a B prospect.

No team is trading their 1st for a rental unless they are sure they are going to be making the playoffs.

ABSOLUTELY NO TEAM would trade a 1st unprotected for Simmonds today --- MAYBE Tampa/Washington/Nashville, but even they would likely hesitate because they don't need to do it.

If the Habs were to target Simmonds, they would offer Scherbak, Columbus' 2019 2nd, and a conditional 2020 2nd (condition being Simmonds resigns in Montreal) --- but again, the deal makes no sense based on where the team is at as of right now.

Simmonds as a free agent is an attractive option depending on the money he's looking for. I'd like to see Montreal move their 2019 1st in a package to get Nylander, use a 2020 2nd + something to get Puljujarvi, then move Scherbak, Shaw, Suzuki, and our 2019 2nd on Muzzin.

Drouin/Domi/Nylander
Tatar/Danault/Gallagher
Lehkonen/Kotkaniemi/Puljujarvi
Byron/Hudon/Armia

Muzzin/Weber

I think any team that "wins" the Simmonds sweepstakes next July is going to regret it big time. Love the guy but he has a game that doesn't typically age well.

Simmonds really isn’t good outside of the one set play the flyers run for him on the PP. Whoever gets him will probably have overpaid by a lot.

Only 2 of his 7 goals this season have come from the power play. He's good for 15 goals at even strength and 15 on the powerplay. Whoever gets him will probably plan to use him on the power play anyway, the goals count the same afterall.

Based off of what Rich Nask, Tomas Tatar, Brendan Smith, Martin Hanzal, and other got in the past two deadlines (Simmer rn is the best piece at that time for all those players)— a 1st + a good prospect is not out of the question. Most of these players, if not all, were rentals.

Teams usually pay premiums for what Simmer brings to the table. I don’t think a mid first and a B prospect are out of the question.
