If Simmonds is traded, it will be for a first rd pick and a prospect. If Hextall was going to trade Simmer, it would be at the deadline and depends on where PHI is at that time.
The 1st + prospect isn’t certain but if the 1st
1-12: obviously no +
13-20: smaller +, maybe a project prospect
21+: smaller upside A prospect.
This range doesn’t mean anything, just using an example.
My guess is that a 1st and RHD prospect are targeted.
Winger/Center prospects flyers have: Frost, Vorobyev (Predominant C), Nicolas Aube-Kubel, Carsten Twarynski, Tanner Laczynski, Farabee, Allison, Ratcliffe, Rubtsov (C/W), and O’Brien (C/W) who all have pretty good upside as a group. That also doesn’t mention Konecny and Lindblom who are NHL level youngsters. Don’t really need wingers or centers
If Simmonds is traded, it will be under the assumption that they will not make the playoffs. Also likely, that in this situation they don't intend to resign him.
At the TDL, he is worth at most a late 1st, or a 2nd + a B prospect.
No team is trading their 1st for a rental unless they are sure they are going to be making the playoffs.
ABSOLUTELY NO TEAM would trade a 1st unprotected for Simmonds today --- MAYBE Tampa/Washington/Nashville, but even they would likely hesitate because they don't need to do it.
If the Habs were to target Simmonds, they would offer Scherbak, Columbus' 2019 2nd, and a conditional 2020 2nd (condition being Simmonds resigns in Montreal) --- but again, the deal makes no sense based on where the team is at as of right now.
Simmonds as a free agent is an attractive option depending on the money he's looking for. I'd like to see Montreal move their 2019 1st in a package to get Nylander, use a 2020 2nd + something to get Puljujarvi, then move Scherbak, Shaw, Suzuki, and our 2019 2nd on Muzzin.
Drouin/Domi/Nylander
Tatar/Danault/Gallagher
Lehkonen/Kotkaniemi/Puljujarvi
Byron/Hudon/Armia
