yeah let's go back to being the pesky Stars and having a couple talented players mixed in with four lines of grinders. That will get the job done :sarcasm:

Let's not pretend that Horcoff is some amazing skill guy at this point. He's a black hole in the offensive zone. He's a decent pk specialist but considering how bad the pk has been tooting his horn seems rather optimistic. He's a guy slightly better than some of the dregs we've thrown out the last few years but certainly nothing special.

Quite frankly no the comparison isn't Horcoff vs. Sceviour. That's actually the worst dead weight, well forward anyway, Ray Whitney vs Sceviour. Yes Dallas would be better off with Sceviour on the roster regardless of whether they make it in the playoffs or not. He's the better player now and going forward and he's probably going to be a free agent. Getting him games and convincing him and his agent that he's NHL material and thus would want to sign a new contract here just might be a higher priority.

well back in town now for another shot at a NY team this afternoon. Trip was fun and I'm glad I did it even though we lost both games I made it up for. On the plus side walking through Central Park in the snow Friday morning was really awesome.

2014 has not been kind to the Stars so far lets hope that changes starting today

Yeah that stat just shows there really hasn't been much progress made outside of grabbing a young superstar.

Shots for is a definite improvement that needed to happen and a step in the right direction. The regression on special teams is a bit worrisome.

Shots does not mean much. Scoring chances are more important. All these shots remind me of the Third Finn Line of Old.

I decided to look at 5 on 4 points per 60 amongst Dmen who play regularly on the PP (> 2 minutes per 60 and at least 20 games played). It's the sort of list that has Weber, Pietrangelo, Shattenkirk, Green, etc. at the top. Goligoski is 70th out of 72 qualifying Dmen.

Would you mind looking at that list with Brad Richards still in Dallas?

Just to confirm what I already feel like I saw on the ice. Early on, much of Goligoski's "success" had more to do with Brad Richards impact on Dallas' PP.

During Richards' final year with the Stars, using those same criteria Goligoski was 22nd out of 76 qualifing Dmen. I don't know how to separate out the time in Pittsburgh though.

So it's surprising that a player who plays on a horrible PP would be that low on such a list?

He's not a player who happens to play on a horrible PP, he's been a horrible PP player who plays on a horrible PP.

Gonchar has actually been fairly effective (much as he has been his entire career) and somehow not weighed down by the PP's horribleness.

It's chicken vs. the egg.

Does the PP suck because of Alex Goligoski or is Alex Goligoski a victim of the PP?

Am I correct that Goligoski and Benn are the only hold overs from when Brad was here that play on this PP?

Also ... I guess I just realized when giving Richards some credit, I have forgot to mention the total decimation of the PP actually happened right after the Ribeiro trade right?

Right, he can be decent when he's a complimentary piece. That's crazy though that a supposedly offensive D can only function as a compliment on the PP. It just continues to speak to his lack of assertiveness, lack of creativity, lack of ability to dictate events.

Gonchar is 20th.

That's a good point right there. How bad was the PP with Ribeiro and no Richards? I can't remember exactly, but it only got league-worst bad when Ribeiro was traded.

No, it was tied for the worst in NHL history (a expansion team) in Gulutzan's first season with Ribeiro and Richards was in NY. Goligoski also missed 11 games due to injury.
Last season (without Ribeiro) it was improved due to the Whitney and Jagr additions.

Edit: Points breakdown in Dallas for Goligoski
185 GP
86 Points
29 Powerplay Points
55 Even Strength Points
2 Shorthanded Points

I think your memory is off. The power play was terrible the whole season that wound up with Ribeiro traded. He was a terrible PP QB that year, held the puck by the end boards the whole damn time...

So after this six game losing streak, I've been really bummed out about the Stars lately, as I'm sure everybody else has. This was definitely nice to hear though:

So I had the immense pleasure and opportunity to meet all of the players after tonight’s game. On how I got this opportunity: my dad has had season tickets since day one of the Stars, and when he tried to re-up his seats this year they were already sold to another person. So, long story short they gave us the opportunity to meet the players. Let me say this: This team is overflowing with class, and the players were SO cool even though you could tell some of them probably just wanted to go home. I got my Roussel jersey signed, and he was LITERALLY pumped that I had his jersey. He goes “You got the best jersey man!” jokingly of course, and when I asked for a photo he insisted and WANTED to take a photo with me. He even put a smiley face next to his badass signature. I could tell Jamie was incredibly frustrated after this one, but still took a photo with me. I wish I could put some pictures up on here, but my android and macbook combination makes it quite tough. Long story short: Roussel is an incredibly nice guy off the ice—and so are ALL of the players on our team. Dan Ellis? The man. Cody Eakin? Cool as a cucumber. Brenden Dillon? Obviously he’s the man off the ice as well. I love this team—even if we lose every game for the rest of the year. Go Stars!

Everything I hear about Roussel is that he's just the nicest dude off the ice.
