I think its overreaction.
Chances to lose Schmidt were high. It's OK.
Now GMBM almost have to trade Gruby and use Copley next year, for cap space and asset acquiring reasons.
Orpik being #5 is good for 3 things: playing with Chorney (seen that, not that ugly for regular season), playing with Carlson in case of an emergency, playing with Bowey as a mentor.
The obvious hole is #2LD. Was Nate Schmidt ideal #4D? That is highly debatable.
Now GMBM has a chance to investigate that and choose any player from the league to trade for.
I believe not paying through the nose to keep Schmidt was the right decision in the end. Didn't have alternative really.
Schmidt is not your ideal top-4 def and never was.
Alzner got broken.
Orpik is old.
We got Orlov out of the warm bench. Good for Caps.
Now we have to find another top-4 LD. Mobile, big, left handed and PK capable.
That's doable.
Orpik's contract is a totally another deal and shouldn't be considered within the expansion protection list.
Imagine Caps traded Orpik and got some nice #4D. Who will play #5? There is no such D for Caps behind Orpik. We can field some #6 or #7 with no problem but every #5 (or better) left handed candidate in the system is not ready.
Therefore I expect GMBM to either get 1 defender and keep Orpik or 2 defenders and trade Orpik. What is easier? Better for cap situation? Cheaper from assets lost standpoint?
We will see shortly.
PS: I bet Emelin for Orpik would benefit Caps significantly. 2018's #2 would be a nice price for that. This is just an example though. Better to trade for Neal
