Should have been doing this for the last 8 or so years but Benning couldn’t seem to grasp the concept.

The similarities between this and the Leafs from 2006-14 is uncanny. Canucks had better core pieces with EP and QH, but the obstinate management, ownership with their thumb on the scale, absurd money for depth pieces, exasperated fan bases having to hear they won't accept the rebuild they've been screaming for, insane media maelstrom, and a playoff appearance during a shortened season that saw everyone in power treat it as a reason to double down instead of take with a grain of salt.

It cost the Canucks a 2nd to dump two years of effectively $1.3M in the Jason Dickinson trade so do the math here.
They got some value back in the young defenseman. Without him in the deal, maybe they only give up a 3rd or 4th.

Stillman in no way was a positive addition, simply a way for Chicago to accept less salary/cap space.

Regardless, the Rangers traded two 2nd round picks to dump Nemeth and his $2.5M cap hit for two years. Retaining $2.3M of Karlsson would be completely dead cap space, not even a warm body to put in your lineup and hopefully turn around so you can move for value in the future.

Why has he played in 30+ games then?

If what the article says is true, that Ken Holland wants upwards of $5M AAV in retention, then they were never serious about acquiring him in the first place - this is just posturing for the fans, so they can act like they tried.

The Oilers management has yet to give up any significant futures in an attempt to bolster the line up to make a run. I have little faith they’ll start now.

Their strategy seems to be to hope and pray McDavid can drag them to a Cup somehow.

With the goaltending and defense the way it is currently, there’s essentially 0 chance of that happening, so I guess we should just enjoy the show of McDavid’s last few years in an Oilers jersey.

It really isn’t. $2.3M isn’t that much, especially for a bottom feeder like the Canucks
Ad deadline… around $750K costs a 1st. Eating $10M over 4+ yrs is going to cost a lot more.

the only lower amount would be with Anaheim who might struggle to reach the cap floor the next few years.
