Pretty clear teams are refusing to spend money unless it’s a great deal for them. I’m guessing the ask to take on Fleury were absurd

So Vegas values a 1st and 2nd round pick plus 7mil of Fleury over Nate Schmidt?

To me that is just dumb. If they move Fleury they get to keep Nate. And a dman like him is basically what you would pay at the deadline anyway(1st and 2nd). So they could have avoided all of this just by accepting what teams wanted for Fleury. Then had a much better team going forward.

it appears they want two solid goalies in case lehner goes down and with a compressed schedule next season many teams are going to be leaning on their backups for b2b's and to spread the workload

Vegas has no plan whatsoever. They are just chasing it tails. I bet they will also trade Fleury, and they will have to sacrifice a 2nd plus a 3rd to do so.

So this trade obviously looks horrible and is horrible.. BUT...

The net result of this trade is:

Schmidt

For

Pietro
3rd

So if you look at the whole thing it doesn't seem as bad. NOT trying to defend the trade.. I think they should have gotten more than a 3rd, but still, it doesn't look as bad when looking at the big picture.
It is not at all equivalent to that. That is the route they chose to bring Pie in but there were other ways to make salaries work that didn't rely on moving a top 4 defensemen. They very easily could have kept Schmidt and then getting Pietrangelo is a pure upgrade on their defense.

I really don't see how hanging on to a late 1st is worth losing Schmidt when they still are above the cap anyway.

Two teams that went through a rebuild for 500, Alex.

Vancouver didn’t, an apples to Iphones comparison.
which makes what Vancouver has done more impressive.
The lads couldn't even get the benefit of trading their 2 most tradable assets and get extra 1sts/2nds to help for the retool in the Sedins.
They didn't tank forever or rely on ping pong balls to find their goods.

Did it with good scouting and shrewd moves. If Demko is real, they are set. But a certain sector of their fanbase will scream about Jay Beagle while their GM keeps accidentally stepping in shit with these impactful moves like drafting Boeser, EP, Hughes, Demko, trading for Miller and Schmidt etc

This is fantastic for Vancouver, clear upgrade over Tanev and Stecher And for a 3rd no less. Now let's sign a D-man and a forward on 1 yr deals and be done with the off-season.

Yeah, it was a dumb contract, but we didn’t have to let him go. But congrats. You got Vegas Pietrangelo.

They gave up an asset to help their divisional rival sign a top 5 defenseman and all they got was Nate Schmidt

Yes, because Vegas would not have been able to trade him anywhere else.

what more does Jim Benning have to do to get a little respect?

Steals a very good dman for nothing from Vegas, gets a revelation in JT Miller, drafts franchise C, franchise D, and a potential franchise winger and has built a better team than Toronto or Edmonton in the same amount of time despite never having a top 3 lotto pick
but some people go on about how he signed Jay f***ing Beagle and Antoine Roussel?

Loui Eriksson, Brandon Sutter, Tyler Myers, Sven Baertschi, Jordie Benn, Michael Ferland, and that's just guys currently on the roster.

Have you looked at his entire body of work??

A 3rd round pick isnt a massive asset
You could make the same argument for Faulk who SUCKS

why give a scrub a big contract and not pietro?

They didn't tank for half a decade or rely on ping pong balls to find their goods.

More like you play in a shitty division.

You can be impressed if you’d like, but don’t expect other to be.
