Regarding DiPietro:

The Canadiens once threw a 21-year-old goalie to the wolves in Philadelphia in 1997.

He gave up 4 goals on 14 shots in 1 period.

That was the only game he played for the Canadiens.

He went on to play 699 more games in the NHL, playing twice in the Olympics.

Tomas Vokoun.

Not sure what that has to do with DiPietro. Looking at hockeydb Vokoun came over from Europe and was Montreal's AHL starter, got in one game for what must have been an injury callup, then after another year in Montreal's AHL system got claimed in the expansion draft by Nashville where he was the backup for another 4 years before becoming the starter.

I don't think anyone's concerned that DiPietro gave up a lot of goals in his first NHL start, that's not the issue here.

Except for the fact that giving up a lot of goals in your first NHL game is not the end of the world.

The other side of the coin:

Olivier Michaud, 18 years old, came in on Oct 30, 2001, to replace Mathieu Garon.

He faced 14 shots in 18 minutes without giving up any goals.

That was his only game in the NHL.
