I think Mazanec is like 27yrs old. That is pretty much all you need to know about him regarding his potential to carry your team. This is purely a stop gap measure.

Benning should be criticized for waiting for an AHL goalie to be waived, but he shouldn't be criticized for trading Nilsson. Demko was with the team, Nilsson would never pass waivers, and did no good sitting as third string.

Given Nilsson's play leading up to the trade, it was a coup for Benning to get a pick while moving a $2.5M cap hit backup. The flaw is, after McKenna was scooped, not making an AHLer for AHLer trade to get another goalie in the system. That said, a 2020 7th to cover that flaw is a pretty low price to pay.

Wow. 4 hours ago!

Article says Achilles, and then knee later :dunno:

But that puts this trade in a better perspective
Vancouver's goalies in the system before the trade:
Markstrom
Demko - injured
Bachman - injured
DiPietro
Thiessen - unsigned

Compare that to New York, before the trade:
Lundqvist
Georgiev
Tokarski
Mazanec
Nell
Halverson
Huska - unsigned
Lindbom - unsigned
Wall - unsigned
Shesterkin - unsigned

Or Philadelphia, who is guilty of causing some of this grief:
Elliott - injured
Neuvirth - injured
Hart
Stolarz
McKenna
Lyon
Sandstrom
Ersson - unsigned
Ustimenko - unsigned
Tomek - unsigned
Fedotov - unsigned

Dipietro must of been that bad for the Canucks to do this.
DiPietro was a teen playing his first game in the NHL against a top team, who wasn't even supposed to play (got the start, and wasn't pulled, as a precaution for Markstrom).
This has little to do with him.

As others have said, Vancouver should have made a trade like this or signed someone before it got to this point (they were waiting for McKenna to be waived by PHI instead)

19 year old OHL goalie thrown to the wolves? or in this case the sharks

it's a 7th round pick and the AHL team doesn't have any goalies either, this is purely a depth move

The Canucks never intended their 19 year old emergency call up prospect to play at all, let alone for any length of time.

You would think though that they would have traded for a goalie a few days sooner than have their 19yr old goalie play?

Outside of a very small number of wunderkinds, you'd be hard pressed to name another goalie who stepped in as a teenager and turned in a masterful performance in his debut. Hart's close, but already 20.

Trying to think of the last teenager to make his NHL debut in goal, and succeed.

Yep, Hart's been great but he's definitely benefited from his short stint in the AHL. Jumping straight from the OHL to the NHL as a goalie is super tough.

In 1992 a 27 year old nobody was traded from Chicago to Buffalo. Today we call that nobody Dominik Hasek. Just saying.
Hasek was at least backup on a decent Blackhawks team, behind Belfour, and played in the Stanley Cup finals (and had had a successful Czech career before then that he was known a little bit for).

Mazanec, not to take anything away from him, has been a split-starter on a bottom feeder AHL team (and had a short career in Czechia first too, though!)

Oh, don't get me wrong. He's hot garbage. I think there's zero percent chance he goes Hasek and turns into a player, but it has happened.

While we're at it, can we interest you also in G Brad Halverson, 2nd rounder who isn't up to expectations but still, maybe add NYR 6th and give us your 2019 5th?

This. We have 2 goalies in the ahl on ahl deals, why couldn’t we just sign Michael Leighton? We acquired a 7th for Nilsson and retained Salary then traded a 7th for a backup. The foresight from this group is really something.

I don’t understand why Benning gave up an asset instead of signing a goalie out of the AHL. Mazanec isn’t much better, if at all, than the player they’d get from going that route.

Don't do this yesterday, or the day before, Jimbo. No, first you must call up a teenager so you can humiliate him in front of 20,000 hometown fans. Sprout a brain, Benning.

There was also, you know, that pesky Iron Curtain.

I thought DiPietro earned another start.
Regarding DiPietro:

The Canadiens once threw a 21-year-old goalie to the wolves in Philadelphia in 1997.

He gave up 4 goals on 14 shots in 1 period.

That was the only game he played for the Canadiens.

He went on to play 699 more games in the NHL, playing twice in the Olympics.
