Edler’s blind faith is just gonna turn into praise Benning for doing what should have been done 6 months ago if this was the route that would be taken. Pathetic to think it took this long.

Perfect.

I would have gone as high as 7.5mil to get Edler to agree to 2 years. The expansion draft becomes a non-issue, we can simply re-sign him. If Edler's true intent is to stay in Vancouver long-term this makes sense.

Am I the only one who doesn't think Jim Benning is a bad GM?

Good move bringing him back. The team could be in the playoff picture, and Edler is a really good player. Term and dollars are a win for VAN.
There have been two versions of Benning, the one before the Sedins retired and the one after. His moves as the former deserved firing. Then he drafted Petterson and gained some defenders.

He could have likely very easily gotten a longer and heavier contract in free agency but sounds like he never even wanted to leave Vancouver.

Can’t blame the guy. Good contract by the Canucks.

What I'm wondering is why a guy who loves Vancouver is so against going to Seattle. Isn't it just down the road?

This is a homerun for the team. The Canucks have money to burn until their kids get paid and he provides stability on an already thin backend. He's a legitimate top 4 Dman in the NHL. I'm really quite surprised at the term because he could have easily gotten a cpl more years on the open market. He truly didn't want to play anywhere else. Vancouver benefited from loyalty here.

I have huge respect for Edler alaways signed for reasonable even in his peak , has stayed true to his team from the get go , not demanding insane contracts and refusing to be dealt to contenders at deadline , the NHL needs more players like this because many teams would not be in cap hell every season , and joke contracts like Hayes just signed would not happen

There are plenty who have defended Jimmy from the beginning on various Canuck sites.

He would have gotten more then 2 years in the open market. 6’3 220lb offensive dman who spent years playing 23:00 on the top power play unit. Plays a hard hitting game comes playoffs. Good deal glad it’s only 2 years.

Can he be exposed in the expansion draft in 2 yrs? Thought only signed players without NMCs could be exposed.
He will be a ufa 4 days after the Xdraft. This is actually the best for both sides, Edler won't be taken by Seattle since his contract expires 4 days after the draft, Edler will be a ufa and can negotiate another deal in 2 years. Win win.

how do you know this couldve been done 6 months ago?

and what difference does it make if he signed then or now?
The difference is they could have focused on actually improving the team.
Instead of vilifying Edler as a bad guy who just wanted a commitment from the only team he’s ever played for, maybe we should focus on the consistent incompetence of management to get no brainers done.

Edler clearly never wanted to leave, he’s constantly stated so. Championing this around as some big win because Dim finally got a no brainer contract done is just typical for how low the bar is around Canucks nation.
