I hate the thought of losing guys for nothing.

But I hate the thought of having no depth in the playoffs.

That's exactly it. We could win the cup but let go of someone like Bolland/Raymond/Kulemin in the offseason and fans will say stupid Nonis could of got picks for them!!!

I think a lot of us has got used to being sellers at the trade deadline and not making the playoffs that they aren't used to losing players(MacArthur, Komarov) for nothing.

Reimer is gone IMO, guy could easily get 4-4.5m with another team next year, we cant afford that when Bernier is just fine as our only #1 around 2.8m.

Trade him while his value is high, we dont need two #1 goalies(although its a great problem to have.)

RFAs don't easily get anything from other teams.

4m+ offer sheet will cost a 1rst and 3rd, not sure those bad teams that need a #1 have any interest in giving up their 1rst in McDavids draft year.

We could only be so lucky to have JR 4m+ offer sheeted by a bad team.

JR won't have any hand.

The youth factor is being ignored. Ashton is meant to make Kulemin redundant. Leivo may replace Raymond. At least one young defenseman (Percy, Granberg, MacWilliam) is making the team next season.

Dion Phaneuf: Allowed to walk, another veteran signed to take his place on the roster
Dave Bolland: Signed for a short term.
Jay McClement: Signed for a short term.
James Reimer: Traded during this season.
Cody Franson: Signed to a longer term.
Jake Gardiner: Traded.
Mason Raymond: Allowed to walk and is replaced by a young player on an entry level deal.
Nikolai Kulemin: Allowed to walk. Too expensive for what he is. Better money may be available for him in the KHL.
Paul Ranger: Signed.
Mark Fraser: Allowed to walk.
Peter Holland: Spends the rest of this season with the Marlies then gets a short deal like Colborne got.
Carter Ashton: Signed for under 1 million on a one way deal.

I suck at this game, I'm just going to provide my thoughts.

I honestly think the key here too is Nonis' mantra of the player needs to come to Nonis and tell him that they want to play in Toronto. That's why Nonis got it done right away (and why I personally feel Nonis would have traded him to get a massive return).

Dion Phaneuf: I honestly think it depends on how much money he wants - and how long he wants to stay here. rumours were that Dion would take a money hit, for a year hit - and I'd take that any day of the week. He helps stabilize the Blueline.

Dave Bolland: re-sign him. I think Nonis had a feeling that he could probably re-sign him, or he doesn't bust that trade (which started the second Chicago wins the cup). the fact that Bolland was getting primo assignments and more chances than he did in Chicago helps this factor + he was injured. this might allow him to take a pay cut

Jay McClement: this one is tough. He really makes our PK pop... but I think it depends on the money. (He did take a price cut to sign here.)

James Reimer: this one is the toughest decision I feel Nonis will make. Do you trade him? Do you give him a Bernier deal (but then leave yourself open to UFA in 2 years?).

Cody Franson: personally I'd trade him, and bring up a more physical rookie/prospect.

Jake Gardiner: sign him, and hope he matures.

Mason Raymond: i'd sign him - but he's not going to sign for 1 milliion dollars  I'd actually like see him down the 40-50 game mark (or more importantly - during the playoff run).

Nikolai Kulemin: again tough. we'd need him for our PK/Playoff run - but I don't see him signing in Toronto - so I'd like to get a pick or something. though I believe that "Losing players for nothing." is a myth (them leaving = cap space). I'd also like to start collecting picks like Montreal etc. tend to do.

Paul Ranger: I honestly think it depends on what he wants vs. who is available for UFA.

Mark Fraser: (see Paul ranger)

Peter Holland: sign him

Carter Ashton: sign him

The top 6 forwards are too expensive. Somebody's gotta go. Clarkson is looking like a terrible, terrible signing now. (Okay, it looked like a terrible signing at the time.)

I don't know what the statistics are but our top 6 can't be that highly paid compared to others. JVR, Kadri, Lupul all on great deals. Clarkson and Bozak overpaid. Kessel is the only expensive one but he's elite and deserves it.

Not saying offer sheet, but you'd have to think Reimer expects at LEAST Bernier's salary, but being as he's now more proven than Bernier at the time of his signing, he'll want 3.5m+.

We have no reason to pay two goalies top dollar, when we can just trade one, use bernier as our main guy and sign a back up for 1-1.5m.

Your Worst Nightmare
Dion Phaneuf: 6 years, 6.75 mil per
Dave Bolland: 4 years, 3.75 mil per
Jay McClement: 2 years, 1.85 mil per
James Reimer: 2-3 years, 2.9 mil per
Cody Franson: 4 years, 3.85 mil per
Jake Gardiner: 2 years, 2.25 mil per
Mason Raymond: 2 years, 3 mil per

Paul Ranger: 1 year, 1 mil

Could be lots of moving parts. One of Gardiner/Franson could be moved. Reimer could be moved. Kulemin, Raymond, Fraser and Ranger could walk and be replaced internally or with cheaper FA's.

I could see Kulemin dealt before the trade deadline and Reimer before the draft.
