Tyson Barrie leads defensemen in PPG

That has always been a meme that gets repeated. Just like how hf thinks he's a PP specialist, even though prior to this season his PP production was trash compared to his 5on5 #s. Tyson has long been perfectly fine defensively and has been even better than usual this year.

71 points in an 82 game season
Sorry but he has never been strong defensively. He has always been rated amongst the worst in the league.

Never said he was strong defensively, I said he's been perfectly fine.

As for the bolded, that's why his two-way play is hugely under-rated.

I mean he’s one of the three best offensive dmen in the NHL. If he was strong defensively he’d be the best dman in the league lol.

He’s not poor defensively. He’s an elite #3 that can play top pairing minutes. And play well. Just not big enough to play the top pair consistently imo.

I don't even know if that's true anymore with how well he played after EJ went down.

Tyson Barrie is to Colorado what Tory Krug is to Boston. One of the top 3-7 offensive d-men in the game who get a bunch of hatred from their own fans because they don't play D. Would love to have either on my team.

it's a shame Chia couldn't make some trade for him back when there was friction between Barrie and Sakic. Now likely finding wins heals all wounds and we'll have to look elsewhere

Eh, Barrie wasn't ever going to be traded before Duchene. And after the haul Joe got for Duchene I don't think he'd move Barrie for anything but a young stud like Leon...with whatever plusses could make it happen.

So unless you're down for turning Leon into Barrie, Kerfoot, and some picks; I don't think you'd have liked what Chia would've had to give up to bring T-boobs in ;-)

He played well. We know he uses his stick. He battles. His defensive IQ is really good. Rarely lost back there. I just think it’s not ideal. Or his strong suit.

I personally don’t want him playing 82 on that pair. But I’m of the opinion you can’t win a Stanley Cup with a PURE offensive dman as your number 1. Not even EK.

That said. He’s such a blessing to have on the second pair. He definitely can step up and eat those minutes in case of injury. And when sheltered he’s just one of the best OFD in the game.

I’m glad they didn’t trade Boobies

The friction was supposedly between Barrie and Roy, not Sakic. Roy was the one who insisted for a very long time that Barrie should be traded because he didn't like the way he approached the game from the back end.

Barrie has always wanted to be an Av he just wanted to be paid what he deserved to be paid. He and Mackinnon are also extremely close friends and I'd venture to guess Barrie would be willing to take a discount this time around to better help the team with the direction it's going. I Imagine both he and Mack would love nothing more then to win a cup playing together.

I'll joke about him being trade bait when he scores a goal, but he will leave a big void if he leaves.

Not only does he have huge chemistry with MacKinnon on the ice, they're pretty much best buds off the ice. Can't imagine MacKinnon being happy if the Avs just ship him off despite his good play.

It really does seem like a lot of people just want to finish trading away our '09 draftees.

My friend has a picture of Mack and Barrie sitting in his dad's Ferrari soon after Mack was drafted. They hadn't made the big bucks yet and were so happy to be in a Ferrari, it's hilarious.

Barrie is underrated defensively. The reason some AVS fans want to trade him is because they don't believe he'll resign in Colorado. It's not because they think he isn't good.

That said, he's an exceptional offensive defenseman, he has a higher PPG than players like:

Radulov
Marner
Tarasenko
E. Karlsson
Klingberg

Rated by who exactly? People who never saw him play and can't get past the "he's small and puts up points, so he must suck defensively" narrative? You know the same people who called him a PP specialist despite the fact he was far from good on the PP.

The only ones who hate him are those who don't understand how hockey works today and are stuck in the hur-dur big boy hockey of the times past.

There was no friction.

I like barrie and don't want him traded but he's pretty bad defensively lol usually good for atleast 1 brain fart a game. His ability to skate the puck out of the zone and making outlet passes are good but once we get hemmed in the zone it gets pretty nasty. His pros outweighs his cons significantly and he's a real valuable piece to our team but his defensive game is definitely below average I'd say

Noteworthy but definitely not Norris worthy, even with healthy season. As painful it is, I do watch quite a lot of Avalance games, for the same reason I watch a lot Central division games: I want to be on par where the competition concerning the Wild are. Also Rantanen playing for the Avs helps quite a bit, not to mention MacKinnon who I've always liked, is right now easily the most entertaining player in the NHL. That being said, my point is Barrie gets caught defensively a lot. He's not the worst in the league, but he's barely somewhere between below average and bad on that regard.

Barrie is 8th among NHL defenseman in scoring (4 points away from being 4th) despite missing nearly 6 weeks with an injury.

The game has changed. Tyson Barrie is exactly who you want on your blueline

there's a reason cooke was told to target his knee in 2014. it changed the entire series. Even Avs fans are only now finally beginning to understand what they have.

Before this year he would have not gotten even close to that.

*shrug* Barrie had more value before this season than did Duchene. This has been Barrie's best season, but it's not his 1st excellent season. And this hasn't been the first time he thrived when EJ went down.

I think people just look at Barrie's size and assume he's worse defensively than he actually is. His issues are really overblown. He's a very smart player with a good stick and he holds his own against much bigger players fairly often. He's never going to outmuscle the biggest players in the league but he's good at planting and not giving the puck up; I think he gets in trouble the most when he's actively avoiding contact and panicking with the puck to get out of the way of it.

There's definitely a mental aspect to that; when you're told a billion times that you're too small to play defense (and it sounds like that was his main takeaway from his arbitration hearing), you start to internalize it. He kind of has the opposite problem of Letang, who I think plays like he thinks he's 6'5" and it gets him in trouble. Barrie does much better when he doesn't overthink stuff and just lets his natural smarts and abilities take over.
