6 years at $8M is the max years and AAV I would do if I were Dean, and I would start the negotiations at 4 years and $8.5M AAV.

Why would you start at 4 years? You know Kopitar isn't even going to give four years a glance without testing UFA so just skip to 5 years at a minimum.

The AAV will likely go down based on the years you give, so 4 at $8.5 mill per Kopitar would just turn his head. He gets $9.5 or $10 million per over four years at a minimum the first five minutes into UFA.

Six year at $8 million would be ignored too but it's better.

Getzlaf signed his deal in 2012-2013, or three years before Kopitar would be able to sign his extension. If you assumed a modest three per cent inflation for Kopitar, and I believe in reality NHL salaries increase about five to six per cent annually on average, then Kopitar would see $8.75 million per roughly. On a six year deal, that'd be $52.5 million. On eight years that'd be $70 million.
