Thursday Sweet 16 games up big on TBS, down big on CBS

hursday’s Kansas State-Michigan State NCAA men’s basketball regional semifinal averaged 5.92 million viewers on TBS, up 88% from Villanova-Michigan last year (3.15M) and the largest Sweet 16 audience on the network — excluding two years ago, when the games aired in standalone weekend windows — since 2015 (Wisconsin-North Carolina: 6.89M). (As with all multi-year highs, keep in mind out-of-home viewing was not included in viewership prior to two years ago.)
CBS led the way in the late window with 6.13 million for Gonzaga’s thrilling win over UCLA, but that was still down 25% from Duke’s narrow win over Texas Tech last year (8.23M). In the same window on TBS, Florida Atlantic’s upset of Tennessee drew 3.97 million — up 68% from Houston-Arizona a year ago (2.36M).

Just like Thursday, Friday’s Sweet 16 viewership soared on TBS and sank on CBS. Viewership soared at least two-thirds for all four Sweet 16 games on TBS. In sharp contrast to TBS, all four Sweet 16 games on CBS declined by at least a quarter — and three of the four declined by more than 40 percent. As on Thursday, the TBS gains were not enough to make up for the CBS shortfall. The networks combined for 9.66 million viewers in the early window and 9.18 million in the nightcap, down 25% and 19% respectively from last year (12.83M; 11.37M) and the two least-watched Sweet 16 windows since 2016. Thursday’s windows declined 10% and 5%.

I think much of the NCAA ratings deal with how big a school is in the nation. So Big 10 and SEC universities probably get more viewers than the likes of Xavier vs DePaul as one example.
