Oh, let's just calm down - this is one person with one opinion, using whatever statistics he can find to justify what he already thought about a player.

We might as well say that every single Mulletman thread proves that "watching players play" is overrated as a way to evaluate players.

But feel free to crusade on.
Nah, before looking into him more closely I thought of him as most of you do as a good 5. But his numbers look very similar to the rest of the canes defense save for fleury, making it seem like the big drop off isn’t from Faulk to tvr but from tvr to Fleury.

Not wrong that he’s underrated. He’s a solid, safe bottom-pair defenseman who flies almost entirely under the radar even on his own team, let alone leaguewide.

That said, he’s definitely a guy you want to keep on your bottom pair if possible. Not a terrible option as your #4 but there are better players out there.

He’s one of the best third pair guys in the league, and for stretches he can step up. Not the greatest skater, not super creative, just really smart about positioning and always makes the conservative choice.

He is what he is though. When I watched him play higher roles in Chicago it seemed he was overmatched at times and I believe the same would happen with the Canes, though maybe in the right system it could work.

Another case of advanced stats not being as valuable as they're made out to be around here!

OP isn't utilizing the stats properly. This isn't an analytics thing, it's just that they're being misused and misunderstood.

Virtually everyone who gets the kind of deployment TVR got will have good possession stats.

Basically. Stats are great, but without context they’re basically meaningless.

TVR wasn’t as sheltered as people try and make him out to be, and quite a few players with his deployment do much worse

why are you arguing against canes fans who see him 82 times a year while also arguing against other advanced stats fanatics telling you this is a misleading situation

Because I am entitled to my own opinions and can think for myself, also I did watch the canes quite a bit this year.

Well, he’s not wrong that TVR wasn’t exactly “sheltered”. His zone starts and qualcomp is a result of being paired with Hanifin. When you consider that the other two Canes pairings were Slavin-Pesce and Fleury-Faulk, naturally those two pairings are going to get the vast majority of defensive assignments while Hanifin-TVR plays a more offensively oriented role. That’s not “sheltering” in the sense of a coach trying to keep them away from good opponents... both Hanifin and TVR are average defensively. It’s a case of each pairing having their role to play.

TVR is pretty close to a league average defenseman. He doesn’t have ton of offense to his game but he can move the puck decently well; he doesn’t play shutdown defense but he takes care of his side of the ice. Having him on the bottom pair makes him a really good player for his role, and having him on the middle pair is his ceiling. Considering almost nobody thinks of him or knows he exists, that makes him “underrated” on some level. He’s just not quite to the point of being a good player compared to the entire field of defensemen in the league.

This reminds of of the charts that said that Tyson Barrie was #1 defenseman and and Zach Redmond was a top 4 defenseman. Advanced stats are nice to add on to the eye test, but shouldn’t be how players are judged exclusively.

Perhaps seven top-4 defensemen will be enough to get the Canes back into the playoffs. If not, they can always add an eighth next off-season.

I’m not even kidding this guy is like another Stralman. He’s well above average defensively and pretty average offensively.

Seems like he does very well in his role as a 3rd pairing dman but I doubt he would put up the same numbers with tougher usage.
