We'd be saving our young guys instead of trading them to Buffalo.
We'd be getting a younger center for 1st round picks (compensation for offer sheeting). Those 1sts will not be worth much if we are able to breakout.

Vancouver will find a way to match any reasonable offer. It would be a terrible move to give other teams fodder to retaliate against us when we’re probably the most vulnerable team in the league to offer sheets (financially and young player wise).

If the Sens open up the wallet enough to get into that 2 1sts + 2nd + 3rd range it might give Vancouver problems ($8,221,464 - $10,276,829) and that is far from an outrageous price assuming the Sens are done picking in the top 5.

It's risky, but no risker than trading for a possibly broken Eichel. And like you mention, seems more ideal than having to move on from one of Sanderson/Norris/Pinto in a trade for a star.

Time for teams like Ottawa to disrupt the free agent system. Rich teams in fancy cities have no problem attracting UFA’s away from teams.

A wealthy teams weakness is cap space and a lack of RFA offer sheets protected by these “unwritten rules” advantage the rich teams.
