He's a monster. He was the player I wanted. But very happy with Tkachuk

I really don't think we can read much into Dobson's production on that stacked team, just like we can't read too much into his -30 in 28 games on a really bad one.

Rouyn-Nouranda is lighting it up. In the last two games alone, RN has scored 14 goals, one of which was an 8-0 game where Dobson had no points.

He is a good prospect, but I don't think he will be an offensive driver.

I agree he is not going to absolutely shine as an offensive D man but I think he is a true two way Dman that is smart and can move the puck effectively. I think he is going to be a stud .. He just will not excel offensively like some of the new age D. Still I would have certainly picked him over Hayton, Zadina, Boqvist, Bouchard and Wahlstrom... Quinn Hughes was also a guy I liked but I would have taken Dobson over him as well although need would be a factor there.

Garrioch reported a week or so ago that we'll try to go after a veteran free agent forward. I've filtered UFA forwards on Capfriendly to limit it to 40 points with at least 40 GP with the purpose of giving us a good list of non-stars. There are a few players who are top 6 forwards who shouldn't be on this list like Zuccarello. Otherwise, I think this is a good representation of some of the guys the Senators might go after.

I think we'll have to overpay in either term or AAV to get one of these players. We've never been a strong free agent market. Overpaying on AAV rather than term might be better since we should have a small cushion of cap next year before we hit the floor, and we can also retain on the AAV at the deadline to flip the UFA for a draft pick if we are out of the playoffs.

Who do you guys think we will go after? Who do you guys think we should go after?

I completely agree.

I liked Bochard before the draft. But viewing him at the WJC, I was not impressed.

I'd like to add Zuccarello to that list. I think he is the type we need..A leave it all on the ice good but not great player that can lead by example.

I'd love to add Zuccarello, I have always wanted him as a Sen, but I think he will be looking for a payday (or will go back to NYR). He has taken several paycuts and I expect he will be looking for long-term security and a cash-in deal and I dont think we will offer that. But yeah, I'd love Zuccarello

He will be looking to get paid.. but IMO we need to pay up for 1 key forward and 1 key Dman. I think we need that for up to 3 years.

Rangers have the ability to turn around in record time. That draft lotto win is absolutely huge for them, especially coupled with a potentially huge UFA season this summer.

Reading these boards, there have always been people claiming to know a guy who knows a guy who thinks Erik Karlsson would be fascinated with the idea of playing for the Rangers in New York.

Imagine how well that could cap off their rebuild. They have a wealth of picks and prospects. Zib might not be a franchise C like a Matthews or McDavid, but he's come into his own as a strong first line center. They have a strong enough pool of ELC goalie talent to supplement Lundqvist as he ages. They will potentially add Kravtsov whose stock has gone up quite a bit since being taken by them last year, as well as whichever of Hughes or Kakko falls to them.

The Rangers have 20 million free next season with 17 skaters already signed. They don't have any major contracts to give out. Buchnevich, Pionk, and DeAngelo are the key names, and unless the Rangers choose to lock them up 6-8 years, none of those guys are getting large AAVs. They could easily bring Karlsson in at 11-13 million and have it work within their cap structure.

Lundqvist then comes off the books before their 2nd overall pick needs a raise up from their ELC. They also have Staal, Shattenkirk, Namestnikov, and Smith coming off the books before then. There's lots of cap flexibility there.

All the picks/prospects they've added in the rebuild give them a chance to go after big time players in trades as well. They've got the assets to add.

Sounds like they could contend for the playoffs next year if they get Karlsson!

Wouldn't mind seeing Marc Methot come back, we have absolutely no room on the left side and he can probably barely play at this point. But he was such an awesome Senator. Heck even if he's LTIR for most of the year but is around the guys it's worth it.

Then if he wants to he can transition to a role within the org. I unno if he wanted to be here I'd be welcome to making it work somehow.

He would be a good signing if he's just brought in with the expectation that he'll fight for a bottom pair job and be a leader in the room, and if he somehow manages to get back to anywhere close to his former self, that's a bonus but not expected.

The issue is we don't really have many openings on defense because:
-As the days go by, judging by what has been said and the changed tone of the situation compared to last year, it seems more and more likely that Ceci will be re-signed.
-Garrioch reporting that he thinks the Sens see Brannstrom as NHL ready.
-Wolanin stepping up big to close out the year and establishing himself as a guy who should stick in the NHL.

This isn't really a depth chart, just a way to visualize it, but we have something like.....

Chabot-Demelo
Brannstrom-Ceci
Wolanin-Jaros
Harpur-Boro
Lajoie

That looks like a bit of a log jam to me. Which isn't a bad thing if it means guys have to compete for spots, but I don't think there's a need to bring in anybody short of a legitimate top 4 defender. We have so many guys who should play in the NHL, but most of them are question marks as far as what kind of NHLers they'll be at the start of next season.

I would not be opposed to trading Demelo if the return was really good. In a single year, he's gone from looking like a #7 defender on the Sharks to looking like a legitimate steadying #4 RD who can play on the top pair with Chabot when needed. I think management needs to figure out whether that is what Demelo actually is, or whether he just had a career year. If it's the latter, they should move him while his value is high (if it is high). If they think he is legitimate, they should extend him before the season so that he doesn't get a chance to further pad his resume.

Dobson is completely driving their offence for those that aren't actually watching him. He was on the ice for 6/8 of RN's goals in that 8-0 game where he got no points, 5 of those they don't get without him.

The amount of goals they scored because of him pushing the puck up the ice and making the right play is staggering.

All this while being by far the best defensive D the Q has seen in nearly 2 decades, and the best PP QB in the league

His offence is going to translate just like Ryan Suters

Oh I agree that there really is no room for him, but he was so good for this team that I think it could be good to have him around for the young group.

If we're trading a RD I trade Ceci 100x over DeMelo. Now Ceci isn't getting traded but if DeMelo is decent like he was this year I doubt it costs a lot to keep him around. Would rather bet on him than Ceci. They are the same age after all

Anyways I don't think our defense needs a ton of tinkering, heck I don't even care if Ceci is there next year (beyond that urghh) Happy for tank mode next year, just think a good solid vet and pro like Methot could be good for the Sens

I like Acciari on our fourth line. Physical and can skate. That could be a great signing for this team.

Did I miss something? Is NYI shopping Dobson? They didn't want to move him for Stone or Duchene aka they think he is untouchable

He'd probably be absolutely terrible on the ice but he'd be an awesome influence on our young guys
