Not ready to pay a 2nd a 3rd and Vejdemo for a 15 goals scorer, its more of what we have, gotta upgrade on the depth winger we got, not add more.

Well, AA has only one season of less than 15 goals and currently has more goals than any Canadiens player (even if he's riding the percentages a bit). He'd help the PP too. And he's only 24. For a 2nd and 3rd, of which Montreal has multiple, I'd take him any day of the week. That's a shockingly cheap price. Then you can try to leverage Drouin's pedigree and move him to help the team elsewhere.

How about Drouin to the Avalanche for Colorado’s and Ottawa’s first round picks.....reunite the old Moosehead crew :naughty:

AA is the type of guy whos producing 15 goal in a bad team like detroit. But here. I would not be suprise to raise his stats. Big forward whos able to play in restrict area. A second and a third with hudon. I have no problem

AA is not available though, have you seen the speed on that guy, probably top 3 in the league.
He just needs better hands and he's going to be a Byron on Steroid later

??

Again, he has more goals than any Habs forward. He's also shooting pretty hot right now. I wouldn't expect more from him.

His game is also not really "Big forward whos able to play in restrict area." Its more, "Byron with more size but less defensive awareness". And he'd cost a hell of a lot more than a 2nd, 3rd and Hudon. Think something around Domi or Drouin.

No, if it's the reset button they pressed, then moves like this are no more in line then just patching for the playoffs.

I really like Petry and he's definitely playing some of the best hockey offensively in his career but I'm definitely coming around to the idea of trading him. Maybe not now but in the offseason. I'm not even sure what his value is but I bet we could get something really nice

I don't think you get a first in the offseason that's the problem. If a team gives a first now and maybe some prospect swap in our favor, I'd pull the trigger now.

If you get a first from a contender, it's probably late first round.

Here is the list of defencemen drafted at #27 since the draft started

1969 Gregg Boddy
1973 Colin Campbell
1977 Neil LaBatte
1979 Gaston Gingras
1980 Ric Nattress
1982 Mike Heidt
1989 Mike Speer
1992 Boris Mironov
1993 Radim Bicanek
1994 Rhett Warrener
1995 Marc Moro
1996 Cory Sarich
1997 Ben Clymer
2001 Jeff Woywitka
2004 Jeff Schultz
2005 Joe Finley
2006 Ivan Vishnevskiy
2007 Brendan Smith
2008 John Carlson
2015 Jacob Larsson

A Grand total of ONE defenceman better than Petry. One out of TWENTY.

That's a really low percentage play.

Calgary is feeling fortunate that their GM did not listen to Calgary's roster demolition advocates and trade Mark Giordano at age 30-32.
And Montreal fans are feeling unfortunate that Bergevin was a coward in 2015 when Montreal had 110 points and Price was the MVP but the coward Bergevin did not want to mortgage his future by trading 2013 1st rounder McCarron 2014 first rounder Scherbak and his upcoming 2015 1st rounder to go get a center....seems like not much has changed in 2019.

So what?? Who says we have to get another Petry with the 1st we get that's really not the goal at all. We've got Brook & Juulsen, you use your higher pick on an elite LD, use the other one to trade up if you can't that's all.

I listed all D drafted at #27, left or right shooters. How many were elite?

Or you leverage the pick you get for Petry and bundle it with another pick or asset to move up or get a prospect closer to being NHL ready.
So we trade Petry for less than fair value, and have to subsidize the trade with another asset that we could have just used on its own if not for the downgrade?

If the Habs are our of the playoffs at the deadline (which I believe they will be) they should look at trading Andrew Shaw. He hasn’t been really good this year and his value is probably as high as it’s ever going to be.

What could we expect from trading Shawsy?
A late 1st?

What about Byron? I love Byron but if we can get a late 1st for him we should be trading him at the deadline.

Montréal have lots of players who can play in a top 9 role

You’re doing this as part of the rebuild process. I mean, in the spirit of discussion, let’s just assume for a moment that Petry is the most “expendable” among our veterans and can net a decent return.

No rebuilding team is going to want Petry, so he’s going to go to a contender or perhaps a team above bubble status. Let’s just say he can get a mid-twenties pick, and a prospect. Nobody is saying it’s a lock to add to a pick to trade up in the draft, but it’s an option.

Sure, if we wait till summer, maybe we can get lucky like Calgary and land a Hanifin deal, or something like our own Pacioretty trade.

I don’t see how any of this makes a trade of Petry less than fair value. Trades are gamble, and the goal is to basically win a trade. If Petry gets us a 2019 late-teens pick (unlikely) to early-20s, that puts us in Robertson territory. I mean, that isn’t fair value today, and may not be in 5 years, but the potential to be is why you’d do something like that.

Anyhow, this isn’t a new concept... teams trade up in drafts all the time.
