Just saw your post on the previous page, and was going to throw out a scenario to you, granted it is a big "what if":
What if Moulson and Vanek both take discounts if Matt likes what he sees with the team this season and Vanek wants to come and really make a contention run with a hometown team? Say in the field of Moulson at $4.5 and Vanek at $6.5? Granted it is only a $1M difference, but after next year we lose Ballards contract will adjust to a $2M upswing. Or don't resign McCormick and that saves another $400K if you just bring up the spark plug. That leaves around $8M in caproom if the ceiling stays at $68M then, and you still have all your forwards locked in.
I guess it could work, but I don't see Moulson too eager to take a discount; Vanek maybe but it depends on what his priorities actually are.
Essentially, we just need to take whatever we think Kuemper/Nino/Granlund/Brodin/Coyle/Haula/Fontaine/Scandella are going to make on their next contracts and then subtract it from the $33-$35m of space that capgeek shows us as having in the summer of 2015; that's the number that we should be comfortable spending to.
