Benning was probably scared that Bowman would completely fleece him on the deal, and Higgins would perform well with the Hawks, that he said no, i'll just not be embarrassed again and not make the deal.

That's probably it. Occam's Razor. Benning's incompetence on full display. He's crappin' no one.

Benning's comment about a late deal being proposed was from DAL circling back on Hamhuis just before the deadline passed, not CHI. He said CHI moved on from Hamhuis after they acquired Weise/Flash

Bob MacKenzie said in the final hour the Hawks came back and had an offer on the table that involved swapping Bickell and Higgins with Hamhuis being the big piece.

Yep

Benning had two shots to get something done with Hawks
1) Before Ladd deal
2) At deadline and failed both times

The fact he didn't move a single UFA even for future considerations and seems to have soured a potential deal with Stars by asking for more after framework was agreed certainly looks terrible on his part

Stars seemed content to go with Hamhuis until Benning changed what he wanted on him. Then they went all in on there #1 target (Russell) who they can sign longterm

Im talking about Bennings media scrum post-deadline. If the Hawks circled back, that's fine - but his comments weren't directed at the Hawks in his post-lockout scrum, outside of saying the Hawks moved on once they acquired Weise and Flash from MTL.

I'm sure if the Hawks did circle back, it was to try and see if they could get their earlier proposal done, which Benning apparently wasn't interested in.

Benning spun things his way and some of his statements conflicted with his other statements

He was badly out of his element in front of media and several local and national sources have basically called into question his timeline of events

I will take word of Bobby Mac/Freidman and others over a GM who tried to spin things with such over the top BS as

" Teams just weren't trading 1st and 2nd rounders this year" and "It wasn't a buyers market this year and trading was more difficult"

When Mike ####### Weber gets a 3rd rounder via trade it is insulting to fans to claim that market didn't exist
