No regular player can fight the paid goons nowadays so things have changed. Look at Lucic he fights regular guys, when he tried to fight Orr, he stopped. The same went for Rypien he could not fight the pro fighters that include(d) Carkner, Orr, Boogard, Googard, Laraque, Scott, and a few others. In history there were not these pros. Johathan could not fight these guys, Mcphee could not fight them and i do not consider Domi a small guy he would have been a heavyweight boxer. Rypien was one of the most exciting fighters in the league with wins vs. Neil and Janssen. Tootoo is the toughest current smaller fighter but there are so few of them it is hard to know who would be second. Most small players are in the league for their talent not physical play.

Sorry, but Stan Jonathan did pretty well against the heavyweights of his day. Shultz, Gillies, Dupont, Stewart, etc., all dwarfed him and he fought them all (and barely ever lost) Take a look at what he did to Pierre Bouchard. He was every bit a goon as Colton Orr, was suited up in the playoffs especially to fight Jonathan, who's head didn't reach Bouchard's chin. Stan took a few to get inside, then twisted Bouchard's head off like a bottle cap, leaving him leaking his sinus cavity all over center ice (not to mention all over John D'Amico).

He won't win this title, but Mike Keane was a beaut.

Vs Darryl Bootland at age 39 or so.

Of the current guys it was Rypien, may he Rest in Peace.

Currently Prust and Tootoo are the guys IMO.

In the past there are two over everyone else that really stand out to me.

Stan Johnathan and Tie Domi. I only wish we could have bridged the gap so these two could have met up. Would have beena real barn burner!

Honorable mention and a guy that could hang with anyone. George McPhee. Maybe the most exciting fighter of his time. Rapid fire punches and the guy hit to hurt. He was in fights to win them, not to "not look bad" <--Some tough guys made careers out of fighting to not look bad. Vukota being one of them.

Darren Langdon fought all the way to the NHL in every league and was a great scrapper and obviously pretty smart to do as well as he did...definitely a middleweight/lightweight . Honorable mention to Gary Howatt .
