The Leafs have the second buy-out.

All you need is a player to file for arbitration, you don't actually need to go to the arbitration.

Considering we don't know how the Cowen thing will pan out, and our depth at the wings, it would be best to buy out Michalek tbh

You are right.

However, that second buy-out window will be opened for only 48 hours starting on the third day following the last settlement (July 29th).

So in their case it will be opened on Monday and Tuesday.

Also, Cowen might not be eligible for that second window because of the bolded part in the following:

CBA Section 11.18: "Ordinary Course Buy-Outs Outside the Regular Period.

Clubs shall have the right to exercise Ordinary Course Buy-Outs outside the regular period for Ordinary Course Buy-Outs in accordance with Paragraph 13(c)(ii) of the SPC. Each Club shall be limited to no more than three (3) such Buy-Outs outside the regular period over the term of this Agreement pursuant to Paragraph 13 of the SPC. However, in the event that a Club has only one salary arbitration hearing pursuant to Section 12.3(a) in a given League Year, such Club shall not be entitled to exercise such an Ordinary Course Buy-Out outside the regular period.

Moreover, a Club shall not be entitled to exercise an Ordinary Course Buy-Out outside the regular period for: (i) any Player who was not on the Club's Reserve List as of the most recent Trade Deadline, or (ii) any Player with an Averaged Amount less than $2,750,000.

The dollar amount of $2,750,000 set forth in this Section 11.18 shall be increased on an annual basis at the same percentage rate of annual increase as the Average League Salary, with the first such increase occurring based upon a comparison of the 2014/15 Average League Salary to the 2013/14 Average League Salary."

If the average salary has gone up more than 12.7% between the 2013-2014 and 2015-2016 seasons, that $2.75M treshold would now be higher than $3.1M, the Averaged Amount of Cowen's contract.

The cap has gone up by 11%, but I don't know the numbers for the Averaged League Salary.

Yup. The have to get rid of someone out if cowen wins his case.

As mentioned above, that second buy-out window will only be opened on Monday and Tuesday.

A decision in Cowen's case might not be available by then...

The Leafs don't have to buy out anyone, as they will have considerably more than $10 million in cap space next year.

For starters, Laich, Michalek, and Greening will be gone. That's $11.15 million in cap space which can easily be replaced by $3 million worth of players (ELC's and 4th liners), which nets around $8 million in cap space, not counting Cowan's 3.1 if we can't buy him out.

Our big name ELC's like Nylander, Matthews, and Marner won't be passing through into RFA status until after that, so their won't be any significant pressure on the payroll from that end either.

Basically, cap wise, we appear to be edging close, but we're in the clear functionally, due to all of those expiring contracts, and if they're traded at the deadline, we may not even broach the cap this season with rookie bonuses either.

:D

I don't believe we're talking about the same "next year"... ;)

2016-17 Toronto Maple Leafs:

Komarov (2.950) - Kadri (4.500) - Soshnikov (.737)
JVR (4.250) - Matthews (.925) - Nylander (.894)
Martin (2.500) - Bozak (4.200) - Marner (.894)
Greening (2.650) - Laich (4.500) - Michalek (4.000)
Holland (1.300)

Rielly (5.000) - Zaitsev (.925)
Gardiner (4.050) - Carrick (.750)
Hunwick (1.200) - Polak (2.250)
Marincin 1.250) - Corrado (.600)

Andersen (5.000)
Sparks (.575)

Buyout: Gleason (1.333)
Retained: Kessel (1.200)
Buried: Lupul (4.300) - Cowen (2.150)
Overage: (.498)

LTIR: Horton (5.300) - Robidas (3.000)

Total with LTIR: 65.381
Total without LTIR: 73.681

Salary Cap: 73.000

For this year they're looking at around $7.6 million in cap space, if they lose the Cowen arbitration, and utilize Horton and Robidas LTIR room. In terms of factoring in the carry over for 2017-18, since the ELC bonuses aren't shielded by the LTIR, they would have to carry all of it over, seeing as they're over by around 700k without LTIR.

To demonstrate why that isn't an issue:

2017-18 Toronto Maple Leafs:

JVR (4.250) - Matthews (.925) - Nylander (.894)
Komarov (2.950) - Kadri (4.500) - Marner (.894)
Martin (2.500) - Bozak (4.200) - Kapanen (.863)
Rychel (.863) - Gauthier (.863) - Soshnikov (.737)
Leivo (.612) - Moore (.925)

Rielly (5.000) - Carrick (.750)
Gardiner (4.050) - Valiev (.778)
Marincin 1.250) - Dermott (.894)
Nielson (.687)

Andersen (5.000)
Kaskisuo (.925)

Buyout: Gleason (1.333)
Retained: Kessel (1.200)
Buried: Lupul (4.300)

LTIR: Horton (5.300)

Total without LTIR: 52.143
Total include LTIR: 57.443

Salary Cap: 73.000

As you can see, utilizing only players already signed for the 2017-18 season, they have plenty of cap space (over $20 million) going forward. That's why when they made their trades they acquired salary (Greening, Michalek, Laich) that had so little term left, so that when the ELC's get to RFA status the decks would be cleared in case they earn big raises. That wouldn't have any effect until the 2018-19 season, and that's if any of these prospects pan out, which isn't guaranteed.

Cowen's buyout is in it's own arbitration, so if the arbitrator believes Cowen was eligible to be bought out during the first ordinary buy out period, then Cowen will be bought out just like he would have if it were the last week of June.

So, rght now, it's either him or carrick who will be exposed for vegas, simply due to this:

<must expose a signed NHL dman rule>

Zaitsev's exempt and gardiner/rielly will obviously be protected.
Extending one of Polak/Hunwick just to expose them could be an option, if we go the 4d/4f protection route. Or a trade for a scrub dman to expose. I'd personally rather protect all 4 with a trick like this, and basically force Vegas into taking a forward like Bozak.

No matter what, we're in amazing shape for the expansion draft. SO MANY of our top players don't need to be protected, and we have no NMCs that we're forced to protect. We're guaranteed to be giving up very little.

Feels good to finally have people in charge that can plan ahead doesnt it

Cowen's buyout is in it's own arbitration, so if the arbitrator believes Cowen was eligible to be bought out during the first ordinary buy out period, then Cowen will be bought out just like he would have if it were the last week of June.

They can however try to buy him out again during the 2nd period. Just in case he's healthy now and the ruling doesn't come back in their favour from June.

The arbitrator could come back and say Cowen wasn't eligible to be bought out during the first period back in June. However he could be healthy now, and eligible to be bought out.

They could try to buy him out again during this 2nd period just in case the arbitrator comes back and says he wasn't eligible in June and just in case he is now.

If Bozak would get picked he would instantly be their best player. At times he was our best player. Cannot agree with wasting assets like this.

Me, either. Hopefully he gets traded before the expansion draft.
