Thoughts?

I didn't know being a "realistic" Leafs fan meant underrating the hell out of them. How Nylander and Marner can be behind Arvidsson, Oshie, Monahan, Shattenkirk, Huberdeau, etc. is beyond me. This is made especially worse when you consider that Pastrnak is a full 40+ places ahead of both, despite spending his entire season with an 85 point Marchand and the arguable best two way forward of the decade in Bergeron.

Because that's what he is. He's a rookie. At least let the guy play another season before he becomes a top 50 player.

What does being a rookie have to do with it? He was #2 in the league in goals, getting less ice time than many of the others too, and he's not in the top 50 players?:laugh::laugh:

Barkov is better than those guys right now. He's just as good offensively and far better defensively, prominent on the #1 PP and PK units. One of the more underrated players in the league.

Just as good offensively yet it only took Matthews 1 season to beat Barkovs career points by 10 points and career high in goals by 12.

Nice try, though

Stats are listed as Points - Pts, Shots and percentage, Game winning Goals - GWG, Blocked Shots - BS, Give aways - GA, Take aways - TA and +/- associated for that stat. All the players listed here had a higher ATOI than Matthews.

Matthews Pts 69 Shots 279 14.3% GWG 8 BS 61 GA 44 TA 76 +32 ATOI 17:38

The bolded below is for a stat the player has better than Matthews.

These are the players on your list that Matthews had the same or more pts than this season

Ovechkin Pts 69 Shots 313 10.5% GWG 7 BS 29 GA 46 TA 29 -17 ATOI 18:22
Benn Pts 69 Shots 201 12.9% GWG 4 BS 47 GA 55 TA 55 +0 ATOI 19:22
Pavelski Pts 68 Shots 233 12.4% GWG 7 BS 73 GA 84 TA 33 -51 ATOI 19:07
Tavares Pts 66 Shots 260 10.8% GWG 3 BS 20 GA 81 TA 63 -18 ATOI 20:25
Gaudreau Pts 61 Shots 182 9.9% GWG 3 BS 14 GA 86 TA 44 -42 ATOI 18:29
Giroux Pts 58 Shots 199 7.0% GWG 3 BS 28 GA 35 TA 38 +3 ATOI 19:07
Toews Pts 58 Shots 199 10.6% GWG 5 BS 32 GA 37 TA 37 +0 ATOI 20:09

Bergeron Pts 53 Shots 181 7.7% GWG 7 BS 158 GA 23 TA 65 +42 ATOI 19:25

I get your argument with these players. The history is there.

These are the players on your list that didn't outscore Matthews this season or any season in their career

Forsberg Pts 58 Shots 234 13.2% GWG 9 BS 26 GA 62 TA 76 +14 ATOI 18:31 Highest Career pts total 64
Giordano Pts 39 Shots 151 07.9% GWG 4 BS 184 GA 43 TA 45 +2 ATOI 23:35 Highest Career pts total 56
MacKinnon Pts 53 Shots 251 06.4% GWG 4 BS 30 GA 45 TA 47 +2 ATOI 19:57 Highest Career pts total 63
O'Reilly Pts 55 Shots 189 10.6% GWG 3 GS 45 GA 27 TA 58 +31 ATOI 21:28 Highest Career pts total 64
Barkov Pts 52 Shots 142 14.8% GWG 5 BS 30 GA 30 TA 49 +19 ATOI 19:24 Highest Career pts total 59
Pietrangelo Pts 48 Shots 181 07.7% GWG 4 BS 158 GA 27 TA53 +26 ATOI 25:17 Highest Career pts total 51

I didn't bother with goalies or defense because there are a lot more variables to compare however, why are these guys who have never produced more than Matthews ranked ahead of him? Are you one of those people who thinks he's not going to get any better?

:handclap::laugh:

Murray is definitely not the 15th best player in the league, especially not the second best goalie. He's not even top 5.

15th best, no, gods no, but not top 5? Equal 5th with Dubynk and Price for save percentage this regular season out of all goalies playing 40 or more games does kinda put him in the conversation.

Barkov hasn't had healthy seasons. He is a much better two-way player than Matthews though.

But he appears to be extremely injury prone and that's a negative.

Cause everyone is upset that he's not a top 50 player. Who cares. He had a good year. What happens if he has a **** year next year and only gets 40 points? Is he still a top 50 player? there's a lot of good players out there. I'm a huge fan of his but not worried about him being a top player. Let him grow.

Can we ban Leafs fans forever? Lets assume you think McDavid and Crosby are the best two players in the world, you're saying a 69 point Matthews with 40 goals is better than Karlsson, Malkin, Kane, Hedman, Kucherov, Marchand etc.. he is good but don't be dumb

Let them have their own website and be done with it.

Such a dream

I applaud the effort. You could ask 1000 HFers to give their top 50 NHLers and maybe 2 people would have the same list.

Edit: I thought about it again. I actually think it would be improbable that out of 1000 people 2 of them would produce identical lists. This is why general list threads on HF are always torn apart. They certainly make for good conversation though.

Some people need to grow thicker skins. Two or three guys go on about Matthews being as good as McDavid and the rest of us all have to pay for it. Childish.

First list was made by a Montrealer so that puts Matthews omission into perspective. It is reasonable to expect a guy tied for 2nd in goals to be considered a top 50 players.

I get that some of you are just trying to get a rise out of some of our fans or you hate the Leafs so much you are just being petty but most reasonable people would give him the benefit of the doubt and say he's top 50. He was tied with Ovechkin for 20th in scoring after all.

Conversely saying he is top 3 is ridiculous and embarrassing.

I love how by post #2 this is already a Matthews related thread.

FWIW, Matthews not on the list is a joke. Easily top 10-15 at this point IMO.

I'm sure you're objective and non-emotional in your opinion
