TSN: Top 50 nhl players

This is a prediction on top 50 players for this upcoming year, not in the NHL. I can understand why Crosby is ahead of Malkin, the last 2 seasons Crosby played 66 games and scored 106 points you can see why they put Crosby as #1 especially if he's healthy. The list isn't that accurate, but it's not terrible Kessel should be way higher I think he will put up PPG numbers again.

I just can't believe they forgot Jagr.

This isn't a list of the top scorers in the league, is it? There's more to hockey than just points.

Sure but when you're a forward the most important thing is your ability to score. Something that Kessel is one of the best in the world at. To have him 47th is ridiculous.

Kessel at 47 is not earth shattering, this is not a list of rank your top scorers otherwise Phil would be higher. It's the best players, again people mistaking points as the sole reasoning for picking the 'Best'.

Mike Richards had 44 points last year, but he is a better overall than Kessel. No argument from me there. Bet Mike doesn't get 44 points this year, well maybe he does 48 game season....

Hockey is a team game, but if we ever want to actually win anything, we need to get some top players.

This is a good example of why adding Luongo still doesn't take us anywhere close to SC contention. It would just make us a middling type of team similar to how Buffalo has been over the last 3-4 years. Hard to get out of that type of spot when you're not getting high draft picks.

Players have Kessel ranked 16.

So TSN guys must be predicting a catastrophic season from the Leafs (whats new) and Kessel in order to have him 47th. Seriously, what ever happened to Maggie the Monkey or whatever it was called because it looks like it picked this list.

yup, from near the end of last season....

I still can't get over Mike Richards and Dustin Brown being higher than Phil Kessel.

They said Dustin Brown ranking was due to his nearly co-winning of the Conn Smythe for his leadership and impact in last years playoffs, and carrying the Kings to victory.

Mike Richards was ranked highly also for his heart and leadership, and despite an off regular season points wise, his last 3 years playoff totals place him among the leaders in playoff scoring.

Good players making their teams better, is what makes them top players, and why someone would select them over Phil Kessel.

then how about alll the one dimensional players from WORSE teams than the Leafs that are ranked above Kessel on that list?

Brown are Richards are core players, Kessel is a great support player. That's a key distinction here.

Exactly..I don't really care much for the rankings but if you're ranking based on attributes like "heart" and "leadership," how the hell is RICK NASH a player that is SEVERELY overpaid and DID NOTHING at all in Columbus ranked above Kessel?

It makes no sense at all.

except your key distinction is backwards.

top scorers in the league are core players.

gritty two way second liners are support players.

-Richards is a core part of the team, that's why the Flyers shipped him off and started to build their team around Claude Giroux.

-Also, Brown is a core part of the team that the Kings were planning to trade him at the deadline.

If the Kings lost to NJ in the Finals, Brown or Richards don't even SNIFF the top 50.

You're forgetting already that Kessel pretty much carried this team in the first half of last season?

The amount of Kessel hate, even here in this thread is sickening and I sure hope you guys aren't leaf fans because its disgusting how much you people under appreciate this kid.

Won't surprise me if Kessel walks, goes to a better team, succeeds and finally gets recognized for his talent.

He plays with Bozak and the guy doesn't even complain...it's been like 3 years and the Leafs have been incapable of finding him a better center than Bozak..

They didn't lose. They won and they won handedly. NJ only scored 8 goals in 6 games, you don't think the play of Richards/Brown had anything to do with that? These guys are physical, these guys are good defensively, and these guys can score.

M. Richards made team Canada ahead of names like Spezza, (young) Stamkos, etc. You don't think it's because GMs/scouts/coaches/etc value more than just the numbers on a stats sheet? Even just looking at stats, M. Richards had an 80 point season at the same age that Kessel had his PPG season (24). He's topped 75 points twice and 30 goals twice. He's known as a solid playoff performer.

These are the types of guys you win with when it counts. Kessels offence is only slightly better than M. Richards, and arguably isn't even better. And then Richards dominates Kessel in every other aspect of the game.

It's not hate. It's just looking at hockey as more than just goal/assist totals. Defensive play is VERY important. Physical play is also very important. Kessel is a great piece to have. But having a bunch of people try to argue that he's a top 10-15 player gets annoying after a while.

You don't get my point.

You can't build a team around Dustin Brown and expect to win a Cup.

We're forgetting that Quick won the Conn Smythe trophy, Doughty had 16 points in 20 games and was stellar in the finals. Kopitar is the #1C of that team and the most important forward of that team.

Guys like Mike Richards and Dustin Brown are the supporting cast. I can bet that Richards and Brown won't have the same impact this year that they had last year.

The TSN panel mentioned similarly that players like Richards and Brown are natural leaders, heart and soul players, gritty solid 2-way players that wear their hearts on their sleeves and the "C" on their chest as captains as a result.

Making them top players on any team as their impact is felt throughout its success by their contributions.

Kessel they said does one thing extremely well and that is score goals and that is what got him on the list as the top 50 NHL players.
