Looking for Top 4 Left Defensemen to play for Calgary Flames.

For the right player any combination of picks and prospects available in trade.

Cap space is limited to ~5 million dollars after re-signing all RFAs, otherwise dollars will have to be taken back.

Call up Ryan Murray’s agent. Sign Zadorov. Play some of the “kids”; Mackey, Valimaki, Kylington. See how it goes.

The forward group isn’t strong enough to dictate spending assets for a top 4 defence man.

I’m wondering why Murray hasn’t signed whether it’s lingering health issues or asking for too much money/term.

As for playing the kids, I’m not a big fan of giving rookies top 4 minutes out of training camp. Let them work their way up off the third pairing, if they’re good enough they’ll play their way up, and not their way off. While not costing the team wins.

Create some competition for spots by adding a depth piece or PTO (Stone? Hutton?) Don’t block the kids path up the line up with scrubs though. Your ideology sounds good in theory but Sutter can not be trusted to not immediately revert to veterans, regardless of performance. Give him 5+ vets and the kids might as well be traded or loaned to Europe.

Hanifin, Tanev, Andersson and Zadorov should be enough insurance to give Valimaki/Mackey/etc. a chance to earn minutes. It’s a meh top 4, but it’s a top 4.

P.S. My guess with Murray is he was hoping for a certain price range AND going to a contender, and couldn’t find both. Now he has to choose highest bidder (fewer and fewer) or take a big discount to be a depth player on a strong team.

They are my no 1 candidate for rielly if the leafs can’t get him to An extension.

they need a top 4 LHD who scores 50 pts a year. Would have room to extend him.

We have no room for another LD. Cap wise or roster

Valimaki or big z will be the number 4

Murray apparently has multiple offers on the table right now. Likely just sorting through them.

Girard for Tkachuk. Girard makes $5mm on the button. No adds. Just a hockey trade.

Ben Chiarot a 3.5M$, 6'3" wrecking ball.

Some games he'll be terrible, some games he'll be excellent, you never know what you'll get with him at every night but overall he's a solid second pairing LD IMO.
Also he's mean AF

Depending of the offer, could be let go

The Flames aren't acquiring a top 4. Zadarov will be getting #4/5 minutes with Valimaki switching in and out. If the other prospects like kylington suck, then the Flames will acquire a depth dman.

You guys don’t have good enough picks and/or prospects to land a player of Girard’s caliber.

He’d be your top defender. Would need a first line player in return.

He’s not worth Tkachuk, and you’re only trying to dump him because Vegas zeroed in on him during the playoffs. A little light in skates to be going into the corners for dumps no?

Yea hard pass, Girard is good player but not a #1 which he would need to be to move Tkachuk for him.

It's time for Valimaki to shine I doubt we try to get a defenseman to play ahead of him if we did I would just sign Ryan Murray as has been suggested.

…Ryan Murray? No idea why he hasn’t been signed yet.

Kind of over spending assets to acquire depth defenseman. Our LD depth is young and needs some runway to take a step. If Valimaki struggles in a top 4 role just play Zadorov there. He's not great but as a #4 PK specialist you could do worse.

It wouldn’t surprise me if Murray has already signed for the Isles.

Flames probably stand pat and see what they have in a recuperated Valimaki. Connor Mackey is knocking on the door too (both left handers though). Fox really screwed us, he was the answer.

Blues fans would offer Scandella, but the Blues are already light on LD themselves. he's a good 2nd pairing guy tho
