Top 30 for 2008

I liked this ranking, however Poulin really disappointed me at U18 Canada camp. He let in some week goals and always looked like he had more to offer. Will be a first rounder, but just not solid enough to be a top ten. If you notice that Johnathan Bernier went 11 in 06, I don't think there is any way he goes higher than a bernier. Team's usually don't take goalies in the top ten, unless they are sure fire NHLers(Price, Rask,..)

Except Rask was 21st overall :teach:

Joonas Rask will be a 1st rounder next year.

No Finns in the top 110? I may be bias but that's unlikely, especially with strong names like Joonas Rask, Eero Elo and Niklas Rantanen. Sure it's not like our -83's or -91's but there still is a bit of talent in them.

Doughty is #2. Definately. Teubert could stand to be slightly higher, and Beach may be a bit lower. Other than that that is a spectacular list.

tomi karhunen may have left kärpät but he's still a finn

I saw every Ivana Hlinku tourney games and the mvp is from Russia... No it's not filatov ... it's Maxim Chudinov. This defense-man is a first rounder in my book. He's so smart out there. His hockey sens is A+ and his offensive and defensive skills are extremely high. He was the corner stone of the team. I have rarely seen a young d-man making so much good things on the ice and almost never did mistakes like Chudinov. I am very pleased with his gamestyle and I hope he'll be picked by the Montréal Canadiens, even if there's no transfer agreement.. this kid is nhl ready in my mind.

Good call, I was impressed with his game reading abilities and puck movement. Definitley a player to keep an eye on. He has a strong stride and he disguises his intentions well.

Voinov was also good on the back end for Canada. Filatov, Grachev, and Loktoinov where my favorites up front.

I'm glad I'm not the only one that noticed Grachev, I was VERY impressed with this guy... I didn't know of him until this tournament, but IMO he was very good... anything more you can say about him, Shark?

NHL ready is too much, Max didn't played a single season in pros.

But I agree that he was the best D-man for Russia.

IMO the biggest risers after the tournament must be

Mattias Tedenby- 4games 4 goals+ 1 assist. Was one of the best forwards at the tournament.

Joonas Rask- probably MVP fro Team Finland.

Others are: Philip McRae, Evgeny Gratchev(he was unknown before tournament), Mattias Ekholm, Jacob Marcstrom, Roman Josi(another unknown prospect).

Funny that you can't say that Swedish 08 prospects must rise in the rankings, even when they won the tournament. Because aside from Tedenby, Ekholm and Marcstrom, best players for Sweden were 09 prospects(Paajarvi, Lander, Bjorklund, Hedman, Myllari, M.Johansson).

And Swedish top 08: Petersson, Matsson, Sandstrom can fall in rankings after winning the gold.

Josi actually played well for the Swiss this spring in the U18 tourney, Garl. He had a goal and an assist, with 13 shots on goal in six games. I had him 26th among dmen in 2008, but he's probably moved up from there and has certainly closed the gap on fellow Swiss blueliner Lukas Stoop.

I know about Josi for a long time. Btw he was playing at U20 WJC, not only at U18.

But for NA fans Josi is pretty unknown, Swiss prospects don't get the attention like Swedes or Finns, I'm not even speaking of Russians, Americans and espescially Canadians.

Yeah, I know he "played" at the big-boy U20 WJC, but he didn't actually get much ice time since he was the only '90 on the team (and they actually only had two '89s, too), so his exposure was very limited. At the 18s, he and Stoop were the main guys. Josi was player of the game vs. Slovakia in Switzerland's last game.

So....for teams looking for a future #1 D-man, it looks like they've got plenty of options. Do any of these guys not have legitimate #1 upside, or are there any guys that are missing?

Doughty
Pieterangelo
Larsen
Del Zotto
Teubert
Sauve
Schenn
Motin
Bogosian
Chudinov
Lalonde

The word I'm hearing is that Del Zotto was god awful in this tournament.

Larsen is too high on your list, I think. My ranking for the '08 dmen is:

Drew Doughty, D, Guelph Storm (OHL)
Alex Pietrangelo, D, Niagra IceDogs (OHL)
Luke Schenn, D, Kelowna Rockets (WHL)
Colten Teubert, D, Regina Pats (WHL)
Michael Del Zotto, D, Oshawa Generals (OHL)
Johan Motin, D, Farjestads (Sweden)
Vyacheslav Voynov, D, Traktor Chelyabinsk (Russia)
Tyler Myers, D, Kelowna Rockets (WHL)
Shawn Lalonde, D, Belleville Bulls (OHL)
Maxim Chudinov, D, Severstal Cherepovets (Russia)
Tyler Cuma, D, Ottawa 67's (OHL)
Yann Sauve, D, Saint John Sea Dogs (QMJHL)
Philip Larsen, D, Frolunda (Sweden)
Mitch Gaulton, D, Erie Otters (OHL)
Lukas Stoop, D, GCK Lions (Swiss)
Eric Mestery, D, Tri-City Americans (WHL)
Zack Bogosian, D, Peterborough Petes (OHL)
Mark Barbeiro, D, Moncton Wildcats (QMJHL)
Brian Lashoff, D, Barrie Colts (OHL)
Roman Josi, D, SC Bern (Swiss)
Vladimir Roth, D, London Knights (OHL) or HC Slavia Praha (Czech)
Colby Robak, D, Brandon Wheat Kings (WHL)
Tyler Schmidt, D, Tri-City Americans (WHL)
Joni Liljeblad, D, Karpat (Finland)
Niko-Petteri Kluuskeri, D, Turku (Finland)
Mikhail Churlyaev, D, Magnitogorsk (Russia)
Michael D'Orazio, D, Owen Sound Attack (OHL)
Adam Comrie, D, Ohio Junior Blue Jackets (USHL)

Churlyaev is too high on your list. This guy wasn't anything special.

As for the list overall, I would say that Michal Jordan and Jesse Turkulainen must be at the list(at least ahead of Churlyaev).
Vladimir Roth is in the same league with Larsen/Voynov/Chudinov/Motin.

Are the other guys just that much better or is Schmidt being underrated? 23rd is very low and I think he's atleast better than Mestery, Gaulton, Lalonde, and Cuma. Just because some may have gotten some early exposure (speaking of mostly Euro's) and are sexier because of a tournament in August, it does not erase what others have previously shown.
