Think I heard them say on NHL Network during that live broadcast of our practice at Comerica that Alfredsson was not at practice. Hopefully just a maintenance day.

Khan tweeted that Babcock said It was just a rest day for Alfie.

Just a pity none of it is useful for winning hockey games.

Really, so a for check is not useful? battling along the boards is not useful? playing with some energy and heart is not useful? a little speed going to the net is not useful? a little hard nose hockey is what this cream puff team needs! it is bad when dats is are most aggressive player as for using his body.

But hey what do I know? lets just let Sammie shoot the puck at the boards and skate around doing nothing right? Because that is useful! Or hey maybe old man bert can coast around watching a really good game doing nothing at all? is that useful? Or wait are you talking about our super star Dan the man? cause we all know his speed and skill can not be matched! He is just as good if not better than all of our bottom players! just not used in the right way.

I don't wont to see him fight , just play hard , good

He shouldn't be here to "fight." Just to help protect our good players, draw penalties, provide energy, bring the ruckus and hit anything that moves. He's a better shooter and passer than a lot of the players in the lineup yesterday.

I'm not sure if this is a compliment for Tootoo or a knock on the current players in the lineup.

Because "shooting" and "passing" are not why Tootoo has been in the league for so long.

its probbaby not good given that tootoos best season is higher then millers or anderssons suggessting he has more offensive skill then either of these two

Looking forward to winning the next game, Tootoo recording 6 minutes TOI and 2 hits, pretty much being invisible, and having a bunch of people say we won because Tootoo was all physical and ****.

Really, who else where they gonna call up at this point? It only took like 5 or so call ups to reach Tootoo.

No. If we win it will be because the PP actually scores and the goalies give up less than 3 goals. I'm just saying Toots is a bigger impact player than more than a few and can help change momentum. Do positive stuff? Ya know. Positive is better than the neutral and negative players on the team.

Tootoo doesn't establish much of a useful forecheck, though. He goes in, he hits a guy, but the puck is still moved out and into the wings' zone without much trouble. This season, he's went out, played seven minutes a night, collected no points, and has managed to be a -4 in his very limited minutes.

this isn't entirely his fault; it's not like his linemates are usually any great shakes, either. But Tootoo doesn't exactly transform our fourth line into anything that other teams will worry about.

I love Tootoo, but what possible difference can he make on a team coached by Babcock? He gets like 7 minutes a game, tops. No PP time at all. It's hard to make much impact with 7 minutes a game. He tries his best to do it, he's out there like a buzzsaw every shift, but 7 minutes with 4th line linemates, not really gonna do much.

I just hope his energy infects the other players and they don't just break down and give up like they seem to these days.

Callahan. Ferraro. They might not be any better than Tootoo, but giving them a look considering their contract status after this year may have been a smarter choice. And I don't think either will likely be worse than Tootoo. Have to think part of the reason Tootoo got the call is just respect for the vets, though.

I disagree. Toots is a proven NHL player. The other two are not. I'm big on Ferraro due to his speed, pk ability and pedigree though. Callahan? We'll see. I doubt he'll ever be the as good as Toots. I can totally see him as a player that doesn't make the roster next year and is sent through waivers, no one picks him up and he starts in GR next year.

Ferraro interests me a great deal, of course Babcock isn't playing Sheahan on the pk so stupidity might reign in that department as well in terms of one of the reasons we are all excited to see him. Both those guys best area is the pk and what they provide to it. They do other things, but they really shouldn't be called up and not used there. He will let Glendening and Andersson run with it and not them for some reason, even though they were the star pk guys in front of them in the AHL last year.

do people understand the value and impact of effective 4th liners?

they suggesst tootoo cant be effective with 7 mins of icetime i say, 7-10mins is all 4th liners usually do get

its not as if andersson playing 14 minutes is a huge plus to this team if anything its a disadvantage

best 4th line in the league is bostons
-campbell avg TOI is 11mins
-thornton avg TOI is 8mins
-paille avg TOI is 10mins

7-10 mins a game is all 4th liners are suppossed to be playing for

Both those guys can primary PK though. Seriously if Tootoo had leaned that one skill he is looking at a 12+ year career in the NHL now he is up against it. His offense isn't bad especially compared to those two who I have panned offensively for quite some time, but faceoff and pk guy along with who would appear to be entrenched as our number 1 pk that is better at board play than Tootoo has him on the outs. His two charging hits are nice to see, not sure it does anything for the Wings, they don't seem to get all that pumped about how Tootoo plays the game even if you do and that is probably one of the reasons Babcock doesn't care all that much about them either.

having a one dimensional skill such as PK when you're a 4th liner isnt good enough

are you saying andersson is better then tootoo at board play because i was always under the impression that andersson was scared to go near the boards/corners?

Campbell is an awesome pk guy, good on the draw, good on the boards, and physical, extremely good on the forecheck, excellent in his defensive zone

Thornton is a legitimate heavy weight, very underrated shot, good on the boards, average to maybe below average defensively and very physical

Paille is an awesome pk guy, spectacular wheels, good breakaway finisher, average physically, but very good on the forecheck while using his speed and maintaining contain, above average in his defensive zone.

Tootoo who is trusted to play even less than 7 minutes is:

a guy that cannot pk, mediocre at board play, decent offensive tools, lays one or two huge charges a game, very good middleweight out of his depth with bigger fighters, mediocre to below average at containment on the forecheck, average to really in my opinion below average in his own zone in my opinion worse than Thornton.

Tootoo can play in this league but he doesn't do anything super awesome aside from excite your fans. Heck we keep losing like this that is something to think about we can all get whistles and he can start fighting more again. But he isn't a specialist player, he isn't even a particularly good fighter and his big charging hits generally do more to insight the other team than our own bench it would seem. Ultimately he just hasn't been a very good fit and has failed to gain the trust of the coach. Hopefully he can catch fire and why a guy that gives zero ****s about his body never learned how to get in shooting lanes or pk is beyond me.

Honestly their board play with the puck below the goal-line yes Andersson is better at a stand still. Was referring to Miller who is pretty good at keeping the puck down there. But the difference in the actual scrums and working a cycle between Tootoo and Andersson is not huge, slight edge to Tootoo because he actually has acceleration speed. Defensively I think both have better board play over Tootoo in their own zone, they are better with their sticks and positioning. Tell me when he can win a draw or play defensive center (Andersson needs to improve here a bunch as he is lost without speed wingers to cover for him until he can hunker down) and pk and I am all ears. Been saying for a while Sheahan should be given the go ahead over Andersson. He is just a physically more talented version of him that can actually skate at the NHL level.

I didn't want Miller re-signed and I didn't want Andersson up over Sheahan but if they are there plan accordingly. I see no fit for Tootoo, no way to help him bring out his game the only one I have thought is Helm that can follow up in behind him on the forecheck. Of course it looks like Helm is hopefully going to play a more offensive role so that hurts the only guy he seemed ideal with.

Best line for him might be Abdelkader - Helm - Tootoo, but after watching Alfredsson with them no thanks. We will see what he does, but I have no love for Miller and he should be playing over Tootoo everyday of the week, so once everyone is healthy I have no place for Tootoo along with the old guys we always talk about.

your last paragraph i agree 100% with

whats wrong though with having a 4th liner who dosent pk(like shawn thornton)? i am not advoacting the removal of miller from the lineup but rather that tootoo brings an element to this team nobody else does or can. Sure he charges sometimes, he also plays with more emotion and intensity then literally everyone else in the lineup incld datsyuk and zetterberg and that si something we for sure need. If the bench dosent get up to a big hit the way the should then they have no business being n the NHL as they would literally be the only players/team to be that way

i dont think the remark about defensive play is warranted nor fair given anderssons lack of ability himself given that is his rumoured speciality. i dont see anythign special from his in our zone and he is too soft and too slow and too scared to prevent anybody in the first place from gaining scoring position on him

a 4th line of abby-tootoo-miller to me would be ideal as it provides all the right elements. some speed, size, grit, tenacity, defensive awareness, scoring, drive to the net

a 3rd line of helm-jurco/bert-alffie

a 2nd line of dats-weiss-tatar

a 1st line of zetts-franzen-nyquist

Andersson is living off that run he had last year between Nyquist/Tatar and Brunner. I don't understand the appeal of him, either, though. He's got size, but he's so slow that it doesn't matter. At least Glendening gets around the ice pretty well. He hasn't seemed remarkable in any way, but he seems like a typical 4th line center.

Well, living off that run and the injuries to nearly every other center on the roster. Ugh.
