this is actually a pretty good poll! I'm not actually sure.... but yah i'll go Toews just because he plays centre. It's really close though.

Toews was similarly good and played the more important position if we look at their early to late 20s. Given Toews's recent downward trajectory, I would assume Hossa will have had a much better 2nd half of his career, but if I'm building a team I would rather have the guy who gives me more value on his ELC+first contract which I think is Toews, then bank on someone signing a decent deal as a UFA after that. I would just let Toews walk as a UFA instead of re-signing him to that deal.

I don't understand how people are voting Toews just because he played center. He simply isn't as skilled or as good of an all around player as Hossa.

While Toews is better defensively Hossa was a fantastic two way player in his own right and sooooooo much better offensively.

Canadian bias I guess

0.85ppg center over the 0.87ppg winger. Toews is also better defensively and is way better in the playoffs.

LOL. Let's see Toews PPG avg once he turns 37.

It's already dipped to .74Ptspg the last 3 years.

And better defensively???

he captained 3 cups i guess is what sticks out. Toews is a good player and their stats are similar it's a tough choice.

There stats are similar only because Hossa went through a decline when he retired.

Career stats won't be close by the time Toews is 37. And I mean even a prime toews would only marginally outscore a player close to 10 years older than him.

The offensive numbers weren't close.
10 best year average:

Toews752837650.380.87

I chose Hossa hands down because 10 points a year (most of them goals) is a big number to try to make up with intangibles against another player who was also well known for his intangible value.

Not fair to Toews. Hossa played in the inflated scoring era from 05-07 while Toews didn't get to, his numbers are boosted.

But still I think everyone agrees Hossa was and is better offensively. Toews' "intangibles" are actually pretty tangible when you look at more advanced stats that go beyond points.

2018 was just as 'inflated' as 2006 or 2007. Conversely, Toews has never played in seasons as low scoring as 2002-2004.

If we take the same calculation above to 11 seasons, the NHL Avg GPG actually favours Toews by an insignificant whisker.

Hossa, but quite close. If we're aware of Toews decline its not really close at all.

PP Opportunites weren't even close. I'm not sure why or how scoring was up this year but it was. Thrashers had 529 PP chances in 06 vs 260 for The Blackhawks this year. It goes to show you it's still not really comparable. And it's no coincidence Hossa had career years in 06 and 07 by the numbers.

Unless the winger clearly is the better player, you build around the center.

Non-PP scoring was higher in 2018 than in 2006, however.

There is very little chance that Hossa is a first ballot Hall of Famer if he has zero cups considering he also has zero international championships and zero individual awards. That's just how the HHOF works. His raw point totals alone aren't high enough for automatic entry, there are a lot of guys with numbers in the same range that had to wait a looooong time to get in.

Even with 3 cups, I'm not sure he's getting in on the first ballot, though I'm fairly certain he'll get in.
