The interest was mutual with us being one of the team he’s open to extending with. I just don’t see us signing him to the deal he’ll want. Maybe we just do the one year and take if from there

That's what's been confusing me, I've been assuming they'd sign him long term. I bet WPG doesn't have a ton of sutors because of that...most competitive teams aren't in a position to give him that contract he wants. I bet he's treated as a 1 yr rental on the market by most.

Unless someone is willing to give him 8 years to get him to re-sign before UFA then yeah I think end up as a rental somewhere and someone gives him 7 years as a UFA
