Tie went to my high school, but he was a few years older and in Peterborough by the time I was there, but know people who know/knew him and some of the things he did are pretty funny when you think about it. Very good soccer and football player as well by the way.

Grade A asshole, huge irritant, could fight but often punked out, cheap shot artist, would regularly commit what Scotty Bowman called the worst play in hockey and that is go into the corner in the OZ, retrieve the puck and blindly pass it in front of the net. The Niedermeyer incident was unforgivable His son seems every bit the asshole he was, hope he never plays for the Leafs

You could make the case that Tie Domi could have been more serious about being a more conventional third or fourth line player and he could have better a few more 15 goal seasons here and there. But his combination of goonery, intimidation and on ice persona is what the Leafs wanted out of him and it’s the foundation of his own personal brand.

1,000 games over 16 seasons, how many fourth liners have done that. If he was a rookie and we could do it all over again picking up Domi would be a slam dunk good move.

The Devils sure as hell milked that for every point they could. Of course, I always found it funny that Nied's "serious concussion" disappeared just in time for him to start the next series...
Is that true? My recollection is that the concussion disappeared much more quickly. Nied was stretchered off the ice, but as soon as he was out of sight of the TV cameras he jumped off the stretcher to phone his mom and tell her that he was OK. My memory may be incorrect.

Some of you talking trash like you would have taken on Domi

In an era where every team had 2-3 heavy weights he earned his right to be in NHL

Dudes fights with Probert was better than any UFC fights. He fought big big guys.

Guys that would make lucic look like a teenage girl. Tom Wilson would be rag dolled

He fought Stu Grimson, Tony Twist, Probert, Kris King, Kypreous, Momesso, he rag dolled Neal and I don't remember Chara having so much balls when he was with the Leafs. It was only after he left Chara finally fought a leaf and had to be Brian McCabe

His fights against Rob Ray were treats to watch

He was over the line sure. But we don't have anyone like that

That was a different era. Some of you snowflakes are forgetting that

cheap shots are cheap shots. Are you not able to be objective?

Fitting use of misogyny for an opinion like that.

Question... what was the NHL’s concussion protocol in 2001?

You seem to forget that Scott Niedermayer was an elite sneaky dirty player... You could make one hell of a montage of his slew foots, spears, cross checks, little sticks behind the knees and in the skates to knock people off balance in dangerous areas. ...he was just incredibly skilled at avoiding detection. And he never had to answer for it unlike Domi who was fighting everyone and anyone.

Hockey Dad Specialist:

“After a GTHL investigation in April 2007, the league decided not to ban former Toronto Maple Leaf tough guy Tie Domi from games. Domi had initiated a verbal confrontation with his son’s minor peewee AAA coach. The coach said he was “scared” by Domi’s actions and filed a complaint to the league. The GTHL issued a statement at the time that read Domi acknowledged his behaviour was “inappropriate” and had apologized to the team president.

I don't condone Domi's off ice behavior ... unacceptable. Niedermayer getting taken out was long overdue. Leafs were second best in that series by a long way anyway.

Domi is definitely an asshole, but he's ours.

I was watching a sports show and there was a player from NJ on the show, they asked him about that hit and he said it looked scary but Neidermeyer was upright and talking to his wife seconds after he was taken off the ice. Scott is no doubt a HOF in every sense of the word but he also had a dirty cheap side, Dr. Hook.

I am not sure if they had a concussion protocol at that time. I heard Colby Armstrong say, after he retired, that when he had a head injury he did not say anything because he was afraid he would lose his spot on the roster and be out of the league. I believe that was a common sentiment at the time.
