I've been at work, but listening to the games on my blackberry. The one thing that's too common is that we miss the net, and we make every goalie look amazing. I tired of hearing these guys getting pinned in their own zone, and it sounds like they just don't have the motivation to clear it out. The following are just my Opinions, and I'm sure you guys won't agree with some of them:
1) I understand Lavi being kept on into this year. Especially when we collected a bunch of points after the trade deadline. I Remember hoping that they would just tank at the beginning of March as it was a short, painless season... with a stellar draft class. But they decided to go on an end of season tear.
2)Holmgren has done an alright job, as he tried to make moves to get what he felt were bad attitudes out of the dressing room, and tried to bring in a better mix. JVR will forever be a Band-Aid, and decide with his doctor whats best for him, while disregarding the team doctors. Carter for Voracek and Couts is still a good deal. (When Voracek shoots)
3) The "Bonding Trip" To Lake Placid: It's a great American story. I played baseball growing up, so I didn't really know about that story until I started getting into hockey again 10 years ago (Became a Flyers fan the year before Lindros was drafted.... HEXY!) But I asked a bunch of my buddies who played Junior about it and it's meaning to them. The consensus was, great story, but it didn't speak to them. I think that's where Lavi couldn't read his audience. It may have meant something to Couts, Hall and Gill... but it probably didn't mean anything to the 15 Canadians, 2 Swedes, 2 Slovaks etc. other than reminding them of the time the underdog beat them.
It probably would have been more beneficial to spend a week in Vegas, run 2 a day practices, and let them bond with each other in their free time. Then, just see who's hanging out with who... and who is the lone guy hanging out y himself pissing money away at the tables. Hint. That's the guy you probably send to the AHL. Other options could have been: Maple Leaf Gardens (Where Team Canada beat the Russians in the 72 Summit Series), Pacific Coast (Seattle? San Fran?), New Orleans, Miami, Deep Sea fishing in Key West, Alaska (Can't think of much exciting in Canada). There were probably a billion other things more meaningful then to practice 5 on 5 break outs for an entire week in a place that reminds everyone, but four people, of failure.
4) Simmonds belongs on the third line. Period.
Voracek - G - Vinny
Raffl - Schenn - Read
Hartnell - Couts - Simmonds
Rinny - Hall - Talbot/McGinn
Waive Rosehill and Newbury.
5) Trade Mes, Coburn and if we could... Kimmo
Still leaves us Schenn, Streit, Grossman, Gus call up Lauridsen and Alt, keep Gill as a 7th.
6) If you have 2 defensemen with long careers in the NHL saying that a rookie has something special about him, or that he's a natural, you take what they say with a little more than a grain of salt. Alt did get hurt in the pre-season on a cheap hit. But IIRC Alt had a pretty good training camp up to that point and didn't look bad.
7) Why did we send Scott Laughton back to juniors without him playing any regular season games? To dominate in the juniors? Gain that needed offensive confidence? WHAT!?!?! So we can crush it with G, Vinny and Couts as the 1,2 and 3 Centers for the next 5 years? Not sure about you guys, but I got better at baseball and hockey by playing tougher competition. If he played 4c this year, and switched with Couts the next year, I think it would've been better for both guys. Laughtons realistic upside is a 3C is it not?
That's it, I need to stop before my brain blows up! I just hope Hexy is in charge starting tomorrow and we have a trade by the end of Sunday night.
