Other than the fact he earned it, I think a good reason they signed him now was to have a say in where he goes next year.

Yeah, if they want to send him to the CHL instead of a pro league the signing bonus will make it more comfortable for a good prospect to live more comfortably.

That's what I would do. In the OHL he will get plenty of time to have the puck on his stick and be the offensive driver in Kitchener.

Love the move, the contract slides anyways and doesn't count in the 50 unless he plays in the NHL. We have lots of spots open anyways, since we are using more prospects in Laval than previous years. Would not shock me for them to even sign Stapely and give him a chance in 3R and see if he develops any.

Still subject to the International Agreements, if he is under contract in a foreign league. like Norlander last year is possible he only has an NHL release. However, based on Hughes response at the PC it seems he is not tied into an agreement.

1st round picks have different contract terms than later round picks from Europe (not the KHL though).
