Peters will undoubtedly be fired if they miss the playoffs. Four years is more than atiquite time.

He took over at the depth of a rebuild, with an openly stated expectation that the team wouldn't be ready to compete for the playoffs until now. He's done nothing but overachieve in the meantime.

The only reason Peters would get canned is if it turned out he's a better coach for young upcoming teams than for a contender trying to squeeze all the juice out of a playoff roster. But that would be, at a minimum, another year off.

If they are out by six or more points-he's gone. Mark this post and save it. Eventually you need to see results.

This is from last week:

"I think Bill Peters is one hell of a hockey coach, so I would not put him on the hot seat and in that category. Not at all," Francis said this week. "This is guy who has shown he's a hell of a coach with a very young team. I don't think you hold him accountable for missing the playoffs the last couple of years, based on the situation we were in and what we were trying to build."

Source

There is also a video of the interview out there somewhere as well that gives insight as to whether this was "GM-speak" or genuine feelings. It was clearly genuine. After seeing the video, my opinion is that if Peters finished dead last next year, with extenuating circumstances, he'd still be fine. Just missing the playoffs or even a good 10 points out won't budge the needle on the thermostat under his seat this year.

I mean, if the Canes miss the playoffs by a dramatic margin this year then there would have to be SOME kind of extenuating circumstances. They aren't a badly coached team and they definitely have the talent to at least be on the bubble. There's no obvious reason they should just crash and burn.

It's kind of like saying, "Crosby would never be traded" and the response being "Well what if he only scored 10 points this year?". I mean... yeah... if he suddenly became a much worse player it's a different conversation. But based on everything we've seen so far, he's not that player at all and we shouldn't expect to see something like that.

their D matches up against any core in nhl...their forwards dont match up well and are among bottom 10...wards best days are behind him but should be a good back up, and darling is entering his 1st year as the starter so who knows how hes gonna look

a lot has to click, they probably arent even top 5 team in metro

it all depends on Scott Darling I called him and Rannta the best backups in the NHL, and I believe that, I believe that they were/are the best backups in the NHL and I do believe that, I think thy are that good as backups.

But they are both starters now and they they ha haven't proven they can do that yet.

But if Scott Darling fails then his team will fail and in his case it's even worse because if Darling fails he has a 4 year deal at 4+ million per year contract, If Darling fails that will be seen as a terrible deal and if they ever want to move it it will be a hard deal to move.

Carolina goes as far as Darling takes them it all depends on him

They have a beautiful arena

Well, the rafters could use some clearing out. OK, NC State, I get that we share the arena with you, but there's no reason to have participation banners from tournaments in the 40s and 50s.

Talk about watering down anything of significance

I'm cheering for them to make the playoffs. I think their D and goaltending are good enough. I still don't trust that forward group. I could see them taking the Rangers' spot, or perhaps more likely the Metro takes both wildcard spots this year, and Carolina is one of them.

Aho. Much too underrated. I could see him putting up 60+ points at C for them this year.

He's that talented.

If they get that from Aho and a solid season from Jordan Staal then their forward outlook doesnt look as dire and that plus the D should get them into the playoffs.

I think they'll continue to improve and make the playoffs, but I agree with the folks who say there's nothing scary about them. They can't overwhelm with skill or brawn.

If I had to pick one player who might change that it would be Aho.

Best case scenario: Hanefin and Reinhart has a strong year, but Buffalos defense sucks, they trade around christmas and Canes get their centerman.

They have some interesting pieces. But not as good as Arizona IMO. But something tells me they are also going the right direction. Landing Dahlin could be a priority.

They'd be fine and in if they were in any other division.

Won't argue with that. I don't think there's another division in the league where there's 7 teams that you can, at worst, go "yeah, I can see them making the playoffs". That's problematic when there's at most 5 playoff spots coming from the division.

WAT? no seriously, not that I'd turn down Dahlen if the Canes were in a position to land him (would flip Hanifin or Fleury for the best possible forward at that point) but that statement was about as antithetical with where the Canes are as an organization right now as possible. If Dahlen were a McDavid, Matthews, Laine, or Eichel level forward prospect I'd agree and would even say that would make the Canes a contender for the next season overnight, but he's not. And the Canes are absolutely loaded with LHDs not just at the NHL level but at the prospect level as well.

be half ass decent in november

go on a bit of a run to get close to a playoff spot in january

go winless in february prompting the fans to start thinking about a high pick

then close out the season 12-1-2 and finish ninth

rinse & repeat next year

Right now i think if they stay healthy and play realistically near their potential they are a bubble team. They are missing a few pieces to be a true contender especially in the metro or an X Factor type player.

Not every team has an X Factor player so its not a must have but they just need a little more fire power and Darling to elevate his game drastically to be a top contender in the metro.

I think washington took a step backwards so this might be a good year to catch up. I think The penguins got a hair worse, Columbus is about the same, Devils arent coming near the play offs. Flyers aren't either. The rangers lost a big part of the team but fixed far and away their biggest problems so it will be interesting to see if the newly created hole hurts more then the newly fixed hole.

When I went there in March I didn't even notice the banners. The rest of the arena was really nice though
