Thoughts on the Carolina Hurricanes?

Ron Francis is building something special there.

I think they've got a good chance to make the playoffs this year (better than my own team, frankly), make some noise in the playoffs very shortly after.

Unfortunately, the reality is that in hockey, like other sports, you need stars to win, other things like coaching and fundamentally sound play can only do so much. There is a reason the 2004 Lakers ran over the Pistons in the NBA Finals... Star Power.
[MOD] but if you run down the Stanley Cup champions since, as luck would have it, the 2006 Hurricanes, there's a pretty fair amount of star power on each winning team, more so than the runner-up.

There it is!

"Something special" = "good chance to finish in the 50th percentile of the conference." SPESH-UL. We can say the Blackhawks "built something special" now that they won three championships in a six-year span. Let's wait for Francis to win ONE. Or make the playoffs at all. Which he has never done. So calm down.

Uh. Has he not built one of the best defenses in the league?

Carolina makes the playoffs last year in any other division with a real goaltender.

One things for certain, I can't wait to physically attend games this year. Walk through the parking lot with thousands of fans, tailgate and get drunk on pisswater, go with friends, cheer on my hockey team in person, know whats going on in the game by the crowd reaction, take girls, walk back to my car flush with victory, buy a 10$ barbeque sandwhich, scream half-formed curses at Derek Ryan, caught before the parents two rows down eye me with a vengeance.

That's what I think about the Carolina Hurricanes- I'm excited, but for the first time in years I feel vindicated rather than shamed by this excitement. No asterisks ("if everything goes alright, no injuries, Eric Staal doesn't start slow again and the Pittsburgh Penguins cease to exist one dark and stormy night in November!"). Can't wait!

I'm also really excited about attending games this year. It's been kind of hard the past few years, but this autumn I'm going to relish the opportunity to walk through that turnstile, scan my ticket, stroll through the concourse with the smell of pulled pork and beer all around me, and snuggle into my seat with a nice cold one for 2.5 hours of the best hockey in the world... with a pretty good chance of going home with a big cheesy grin on my face.

There is literally nothing else like it in the world, as fans in the 30 other NHL cities are well aware.

He made a bad post. The Canes had what, 88 points on the year? They scored by committee, their goaltending was bad, and they got ragdolled up and down the ice without cashing in the power plays they drew. I think they wound up exactly where they should have wound up, not the vast underachievement he made them out to be. This is what I'm talking about: no one wants to be critical of a team that does things the Online way with great possession numbers and historically low penalty minutes, even if it doesn't translate to a playoff berth.

Please good sir elaborate on the rag dolled up and down the ice part.

I think you could use a Snickers bar bro. You're not you when you're hungry. Snickers, satisfy the hunger.

"Is building" versus "has built". Folks are saying the former and you're criticizing them as though they were claiming the latter.

I'm sorry, I was too busy being smug and white-collar and new money come to town to notice all the funny stuff.

the irony of saying you do not know something followed immediately by giving a black or white response to said subject you literally just said you knew nothing about

a bold strategy

God damn would that team be stacked if Tavares went there as a UFA. Instant cup contenders if Darling holds up.
