Speculation: This team is damn good, on paper.

We need to straighten out the bottom six, and Cowen and Wiercoch need to improve their game for us to become a legit contender. It may happen this year, next, in two years, but we are getting there. The only concern is if we can't resign Spezza and Ryan. Michalek to a lesser extent if he can remain healthy and consistent. The pieces are all there, just some need maturing for some, and a little luck to keep the others.

This year or next year is Ottawa's window to make something happen with this current incarnation of the team.

It could go on longer, but I would not be surprised if our team ends up looking significantly different in two or three years with Anderson, Spezza, Ryan, MacArthur, Michalek, and Phillips all coming up as UFA over the next two years. As well as key pieces like Conacher, Zibanejad, and Lehner coming up as RFA's who will likely command small raises (which add up).

If Ottawa was willing to spend a bit more, they could easily keep this team together minus one of the goaltenders for years. But I guess we'll have to see.

Phillips will be gone in two years IMO, MacArthur too and maybe Michalek/Anderson.

Not necessarily big losses(except for Anderson if he leaves soon).

Hard to see the sens letting go of them. This team has nice potential in the short and long, just need the defense to mature...

We are a very good team. The offense is very good, our goaltending is at or near the top in the league, and we have a lot of young guys playing big roles.

To everyone pleading that we need patience, have you guys read about the internal cap and budget stuff that has continually been making the news over the past few months? Developing very good young players and then watching them walk because we can't afford to sign them will not help us. We need to take things year by year rather than assuming we are building toward something bigger and badder.

Too many new players or guys returning from injury. Plus some of the younger players need a year or two to develop.

This team doesn't have neutral zone play.

It's like we don't even have a system.

Puck possession team? please.

The team is far too predictable at the moment

We need to mix things up a bit because there's too much:
-throwing the puck around the boards
-always trying to go back to the D on the offense

Not enough
-forwards cycling the puck in the offensive zone
-one-timers
-hitting the net

So - Spezza appreciation thread (-3), Lehner generational goalie (2 goals on 7 shots), This team is damn good (loses against the worst team in the league).

Uhh, no.

Every other game we've been heavily outshot and outplayed. The Phoenix and NJ games we were lucky to come out of with wins, much the same way Edmonton was today.

Today, we heavily outshot/outplayed our opponent, but were only able to score 1 goal (similar to the Buffalo game, except that Edmonton actually managed to score 2).

The only consistent thing has been our penalties.

No this team is vry average. I think the pressure is getting too us. Past two years we were able to play loosey goosey, but now we have pressure to win and perform. Can't handle it.
