Speculation: This team is damn good, on paper.

I've been watching the Sens religiously since 1997 and I must say, we have a damn good shot at going on a deep (Cup?) run this year.

We have the right mix of players, goaltending and coaching for the first time ever. We have a diverse and balanced group of DRAFTED and DEVELOPED talent.

The team has chemistry and an identity. We're going all the way!

    Also,

Anyone who was at the game last night saw the player introductions were in the classic red black white "O" stripes and font!

Thank god, we might soon be nearing the end of the awkward and kinda ugly Sens logo introduced in 2007 and return to our classy roots yo. :yo:

Not this year, give it another year or two.

I know it's early and hopefully Maclean can fix this, but we've been consistently outshot.

We'll make the playoffs, but I don't think we can expect more than one series win.

We just gave up 40+ shots to the worst team in the NHL...

    Now positives:

    - Spezza has been really REALLY good.
    - Ryan so far has been playing up to potential.
    - Anderson has continued his excellent form from last season
    - Lehner looks like he's ready to be an NHL starter (nexy Cory Schneider anyone)
    - Erik Karlsson, while still having some trouble pivoting, is as quick and good on the rush as ever.

I agree Bobby Ryan makes a big difference from last year

Long season, I share your optimism but we should revisit in 15-20 games before making such statements.

Right now we are getting outshot at a rate that is not sustainable... for a multitude of reasons.

need 1 or 2 more pieces but still need the team as a hole to smarten up.

  6. Bobby Ryan filled a huge need. The guy can flat out score goals. And it looks like we finally have two legitimate lines in our top six.

We just need someone in our Top-6 that can slow the game down when we get away from the game plan. Someone that is crafty, smart, and scores timely goals.

But where, and how do we find such a person?

  8. Trade for that 40 year old right winger from Detroit?

    Just kidding

I seriously think we have a pretty good team.
We just need to stick with Paul's plan, and be consistent at working harder.

Two things I would do differently, is (1) change the PP lines, and not have the same lines be the PP1, PP2 lines. I get where he's going, but having Ryan on the 2nd PP kind of goes against why we brought him here. Get him on the first PP, he'll fill the net like a MOFO. And (2), have designated PK players. I don't want Spezza, Ryan, MM on the PK. We have players that can fill the role, and not take valuable 5-on-5 time away from the 1st, 2nd lines.

    That is all.

We're a middle of the pack team right now, but have the potential to be elite. Patience.

    Turris.

Compared to the 2006-2007 team that went the furthest, we may be deeper offensively, and have stronger goaltending for sure. Overall team play without the puck has a way to go, and our d is a questionmark.

The way the 2003 and 2007 teams played it always seemed like we were the ones pushing the tempo/skating downhill so to speak.

This is definitely the most talent we've iced in years. Probably the best since 06. When you have the luxury of developing a guy like Zibanejad in the AHL, you know things are looking pretty good. Still have to put it all together though. I like our chances on any given night with Lehner or Andy in goal. We need to get our PP to the next level though to make a go of this. Elite teams have elite special teams and goaltending. We're 1/3 right now. PK has been much better in the past few games though. Maybe we're 2/3.

His skating isn't good enough to work on this team.

If we really wanna go balls to the walls, make a pitch for Marty St. Louis :naughty:

    I just don't see it.

If we come up against one of the big guns, Pit, Bos, Chi, SJ, STL, LA in the playoffs we are going to get crushed like what Pittsburgh did to us last year. I think if we come up against Tor or Det it will be a 7 game dogfight. This team is nowhere near a cup imo.

That being said, I hope I am wrong.

We want to play a fast game though. I don't think Murray and Maclean will abandon that vision.

I do not share your optimism for them. They'll score boat loads of goals though.

    Spezza 15th
    Alfie 16th
    Fisher 109
    Schaefer 120
    Comrie 125
    Vermette 150

    Preissing 32nd
    Corvo 35th
    Redden 37th
    Meszaros 38th

Players in Red missed a significant amount of games such that those (already very good) finishes should have been much higher.
Quite a few of the players we have now couldn't hit those targets this season.

And a few things to remember:
    1) We didn't actually win the Cup and had failed with far stronger clubs before that.
    2) The 03-06 incarnations of the Sens were far superior to the 06-07 team. The 06-07 team came together and bought into a strong system more than any team we've ever had, but we were clearly stronger with Chara, Hossa, Havlat, etc.
    3) This team doesn't have a strong defensive base like Phillips-Volchenkov, Kelly, Fisher etc to rely on.

zibby will make a big difference mid season(guess) when he gets back up here. seems he is down there to get ready for top 6 mins here, so when he is ready...he will be gooood.
i like the grant call up for the bottom too. agree with others though, next yr we'll be close.(probably need an upgrade/veteran on d at least)

Perhaps, but the Pizza line was the best line in the league by far that season. Prime Alfie and Heatley with a breakout Spezza.

Man Alfie was good back then . . . i'll never forget the way he played during that cup run. He was robbed the Conn Smythe. I wonder if he'd ahve won it if he didn't shoot the puck at Neidermayer
