Werenski is good, but he's not $1.5M/yr better than John Carlson. It's overpayment, one that could look bad in the long run.

It also lowers his trade value when Columbus is looking to get rid of him in a year or two.

I think Wings fans are going to have to start accepting the fact that Detroit is not an attractive destination for free agents. Even homegrown ones.

In the 90s we had a winning culture and the money to overcome the fact that Metro Detroit is probably one of the worst 5 NHL cities to live in. We don't have that anymore, and it's going to be extremely difficult to rebuild when you can't get top-3 picks and you can't get good free agents to come here.
