Perhaps the Rangers will defer and we trade the pick during this year's draft for an immediate upgrade in D?

Naked picks (those without lottery protection) are almost never traded. You're banking a lot on that pick being more than a late round first if you are using it as trade bait. A team taking the pick in return wouldn't value it that way. They'd like the upside, but when you're talking about trading away a good roster player, they have to assume it will be a late first.

It's better for everyone if the Coyotes just sit on the pick until they know what it is if the Rangers defer.

A pick 7-10 overall (AZ 1st) is a better trade chip.

I still think the Rangers give us this pick. They could slide a lot next year, and if they are competitive, they can use the first in order to make some moves for a run.

It makes sense. I guess it could be used as an additional value for a trade based on current roster player/prospect + NYR 1st for D help but it seems unlikely.
