Hello all. I'll be updating a stats board every 7-10 days or so much like last year. I know that it takes up a huge chunk of space in the thread so I'd also be happy to do a separate post that I update throughout the year instead if that is what people prefer. Here's the stats from our prospects from last year. I'll do the first update for this season the weekend of October 8th.

Why is Cassel's assigned to ahl camp so early? What's his trajectory looking like in the nucks system? Watched him a bit Oshawa so I'm curious.

Had a tough year in the ahl last year after an injury hampered offseason. Didn't stand out at training camp for good or bad reasons. Clearly needs more time in the minors, fairly easy cut.

Agreed but to be clear he still has a chance but may not get it as is one of the last Gillis picks

It looks like the guys they have chosen to keep for more preseason games are the guys who have at least an outside shot at making the team along with the pros on PTO deals and some extra goalies for practice and scrimmages. Cassels was not going to challenge Granlund or Gaunce for the 4th line C role and in fact he will probably compete for the 3rd line C in Utica behind Hamilton, Chaput or Gaunce if he doesn't make the Canucks roster.

Cassels was really slowed down by the hip labrum / abductor surgery last season. Without that, he needed to improve his skating, so it really hurt the weakest part of his game. He's likely going to need a full year of work in the AHL and a summer of training before he challenges for a spot on the NHL roster.

WD's assessment (paraphrasing): "tough year last year, looks better this year buts needs a full year in the AHL to show he can succeed there. Next year will be his year to push for a spot with the big club."

Really encouraged by how Gaunce is showing. Speed, size, some puck skill. Knows defense. If he continues his play it will be hard to put him behind Dorsett or Etem in the bottom 6.

Not surprising that Carcone was ultimately assigned to the Comets, but still, its always frustrating to see a player perform well and be demoted when players performing far poorer are not.

For all who don't think Green can coach "Knows defense." is a phrase you can apply to any forward who has spent considerable time in Utica. The Comets have been very short on elite skills and talent, but they play a consistent, 60 minute, 200 ft, in your face game. Being hard to play against, forcing a team to outwork them in order to succeed (which lots of opposing players don't want to or can't do), and popping two three goals always has them in a position to win.

I remember some similar comments referring to Curtis Valk two years ago and he hasn't become a Utica roster player yet.

I too have much higher hopes for Carcone and have previously penciled him in on a couple threads as Utica's #3 RW. It's a position that has sorely hurt the Comets due to a deep lack of scoring beyond Grenier and a short span with Conacher at the end of the 2014-15 season. However, as an undrafted overage Jr. he is very fortunate to be going to the AHL and playing under Green. If there is a serious player in there, Travis will bring it out.

Let's hope his play doesn't head south and he ends up going north to Alaska.

I'm becoming more and more convinced that when a player like Carcone has an outstanding exhibition game, it actually hurts them more than it helps them when it comes to sticking around. Despite all their posturing, Willie and Jimbo basically have got their lineup set, and they don't want some rookie making their decisions look bad.

Because icing a bad team will make them look good?

I've heard some interesting conspiracy theories in my time... but this isn't one of them.

Hmm...so after being one of the best forwards on the ice last night, Carcone still gets sent out....still waiting for an explanation, particularly when PTO guys like Rutuu, Sheppard and Skille, who probably won't even get contracts, are still hanging around.

Because it's a huge camp... and they have a plan in place for an undrafted 20 yr old prospect to develop in Utica.

They've basically decided that he along with Subban and Cassels need next season in Utica to develop in.

I see nothing wrong with this move. I would have been surprised if they had sent down Stecher or Gaunce... those two have a shot at earning a spot this season and to send them down after good showings would be concerning.

Sending a bunch of guys down that they knew would have no shot at making the team this season while cutting down a crowded camp, makes sense. Keeping PTO guys who have NHL experience over them also makes sense... those PTOs will be dropped after camp.. but during camp they provide better competition to get themain group ready, given their experience.

They basically want to focus on their vets and those with a shot at making the team... let the young prospects with no shot get ready to showcase for the A.

Stecher is up because he's been fantastic and his competition struggled but carcone has been good too. As for competition, he might be on the outside looking in but he's looking at guys like Etem. He earned another game or two IMHO, I doubt he makes it but it would not hurt either and would be a nice reward for his work so far. Besides he's playing will enough he might just surprise some more.

Carcone was never going to make the Canucks out of this training camp. He was slated for Utica or Anchorage.

The best thing for the player to give him the best opportunity to succeed in Utica, is to get him to the Comets' training camp from the start. The best thing for the Comets is to get him from the start of training camp.

Imo there is no sensible reason to keep him in Vancouver.

watched Brett McKenzie's game tonight against Kitchener Rangers
really impressed with his game despite the 2nd period meltdown
he was good on the dot
mainly used as a net presence during a pp
a consistent threat in the offensive zone
showed some great hustles and wheels. probably the best skater on the team
played the body well in the first period
#27 Adam McMaster is an interesting young guy 2018 eligible
Brent Moran DAL 2014 had his good moments
