Regardless, there's something very misguided about the direction the Steelers have been going on offense sine Haley was hired. They're either intentionally minimizing Ben, or they're trying to "impose their will" and pull the NFL back in time. This offense is scared to go vertical (unless they fall behind). All the passes are short, shorter, and shortest, and they go horizontal too often.

The bubble screen has got to go. They must have called that play 10 times yesterday. They want fast passes and have quick smurf flankers, but I think I've seen them run only a few slants all season. It's just an odd amount of play calling.

Even Bell wasn't getting the ball enough. He only had like a dozen carries though the third and he had around 65 yards. Just odd.

I'm less inclined to think he's trying to stifle Roethlisberger and more inclined to think he's just an idiot trying to prove what a clever play designer and play caller he is - to the detriment of most of the players on offense.

those 1st half bubble screens did beautifully setup the miller 3rd down catch when the game was actually in question during the second half.

They forgot to cover up Miller on the play though. I mean, it was more a big mistake on Jax part than what the Steelers O did.

They're also a big part of why the Steelers are 19-18 in the last three seasons.

that sounds like something he would do. He is an exaggerator.

Roth seems douchey and he did some douchey things. I met a woman in Vegas who said her daughter went to Miami and her daughter claimed he was a huge *****. There are enough stories about him not being the greatest guy around. But who knows.

So I don't have trouble believing the Rooneys aren't fond of him. However, I doubt they hate him and are doing things behind the scenes to spite him. Although the Arians "retirement" was quite um, curious.

If so, it doesn't justify the Steelers minimizing him. If they don't like him, they should have moved on from him. Otherwise, use him to his fullest potential. It's easy for someone like Madden to speculate this, because the direction Art Rooney II has taken the Steelers over the last three seasons simply makes no sense and defies logic and reality.

I think most NFL players are *******s. Football in America, at the high school and College level, they treat their best like gods. Give that kind of attention to teens and young college aged dudes and you've created a monster. Hell you don't even have to be the best on the team, just be on the team and the perks are there.

Those that stay humble should be celebrated and treated as an endangered species.

I bet Roth was a good kid at some point, we'll never know him as that though, besides the one time he donated his money to a good cause.

I obviously don't know him, but from the lack of stories the past couple of years, marriage seems to have settled Roethlisberger down some.

In all honesty, not even his past was as bad as it seemed on first blush to me.

Without ever being able to know the story, but able to read between the lines and see what likely went on in the past, it seemed mostly the idiot stuff I saw at frat parties when I was in college. I did not engage in it, but I certainly saw a lot of the same sort of things. The real idiocy was that a 27 year old was still engaging in the same frat boy stupidity that most grew out of at age 20. But that is stupidity and immaturity, not a crime.

As for the Rooneys, the son certainly does not seem to have the touch his father had. I have disliked a number of things that they have done in recent years, from on the field things to off the field like endorsing a political candidate. Honestly, I could care less who my sports franchises, or movie stars, favorite singer or favorite porn star for that matter, support on their own time. But do not bring it to my entertainment, it is none of my business and will inevitably piss off half your market whatever way you go. It is dumb more than anything, and the franchise, while they lost a lot, were pretty good about not being dumb otherwise in their history.

The Steeler legacy is mostly about Dan Rooney. The franchise sucked for 40 years or so when it was run by Art the patriarch. The beloved cigar-chomping icon who was celebrated (not unfairly) during the 70s Super Bowls was the owner, but Dan started running the team in the late 60s - right before it got good.

Art II was named president about 10 years ago, with his position magnified once his dad took the gig as Ambassador to Ireland in 2009. So anyway, while it's possibly too soon to say for sure, there's certainly reason for concern that just because the boss is a Rooney means the team is good to go.

I'm not sure if it's minimizing him as much as it is we finally have a top-tier running back for the first time since Mendenhall's one good season a few years ago. Plus we have a starterish-level backup RB. Yeah, a lot of these screens need to go, I could see that as minimizing Ben, but I'm all for a more balanced attack, especially if we can eat up time with the running game to keep our defense off the field and it saves Ben a few hard knocks from having to do everything himself.

Dan was awesome but lets not forget after that great 70's era they came back down to earth in the 80's. They had a stretch from 1984-1991 of

9-7
7-9
6-10
8-7
5-11
9-7
9-7
7-9

Not to mention 9-7 in 1980 and 8-8 in 1981. They were pretty much stuck in mediocreville or worse most of the 80's.

The same thing happened in the 90's. After the conference title game runs and one super bowl appearance they had a run of

7-9
6-10
9-7

It's just a normal cycle. You don't get to stay on top forever. The team just came out of a decade from 2000-2010-11 where they went to 5 AFC title games, 3 Super Bowls and won two Super Bowls. Now they are in a retool or rebuild faze that is normal after having a decade like they just had.

I don't find Art 2 very likeable but I also don't think Art 2 can be judged much yet. His dad made both the Tomlin and Colbert hires. Neither of those are on him for better or worse. He'll probably get to hire the next HC and GM and then we'll get to see how well that goes.

screens are mostly used to slow down the rush so in theory, so ben will have more time in the pocket. it's more a product of a poor front line, but still wanting to get the ball in your running backs hands.{same as the draw play} jut say'en

So are delayed screens, bootlegs, misdirections, play action, etc.... But they rarely do those plays. With the success of their running game, they should be running a **** load of play action.

Their offense seems to be more effective right now when Roth is under center. That's when they can get a fullback in the game and run effective play action and boots.

Roth is better out of the shotgun usually, but it's just something I've noticed.

4-5 years ago he was really working on it and looking like Boomer Esiason in his prime. This lasted for half a dozen games, but he was really doing a sick job with his ball handling. Safeties and lbs were really biting hard. Then suddenly he went back to half assing his fakes.

To this day I still don't understand why he stopped. Pretty frustrating to be honest.

He's the boss now, so it is on him. If he doesn't like the direction the team is going, he can make changes. Who was hired when Dan was in charge doesn't matter anymore as Dan seems to be retired now.

Completely agreed. With the running game a threat, it should be used as a decoy as much as possible. Running play action with the way Ben can sell the pump fake, we'll be racking up those chunks of yards that people want to see. Bell and Blount are consistently bringing extra men up in the box.

I also think play action will take some heat off of Ben in the pocket. When he's in shotgun, it's pretty predictable what is going to happen. Lining up with him under center, anything can happen, and making a defense ponder for even a split second is one more second he gets to make a play.

Yeah it's cyclical and I allowed in my post it was too soon to pass any sort of judgment on the next generation. All I'm saying is that Dan Rooney seems to have been a very gifted pro football administrator and that what we now consider the Steeler legacy was put in place by Dan. Thus it remains to be seen whether, organizationally, it remains the Steelers we all grew up with. I'm no Dan fanboy or Art II hater, just allowing for possibilities.

I am going to also predict that Roethlisberger doesn't finish the season. No one questions his toughness, but that O-Line has given up 15 sacks so far, which is only two less than the most in the league and is third worst in the league. They gave up nine of those fifteen sacks against mediocre defenses in the last two games. Unless that changes dramatically no QB can take that kind of abuse and remain standing all year, no matter how tough.

And without Ben, God help this team.

No doubt. Dan was certainly special and the transition away from him to anyone else is scary for the reason you mentioned. The same results with the next generation are certainly not guaranteed. I'm sure it's tough for Art II as well. He has almost impossible shoes to fill given his father's overwhelming success.

I agree that it's still way too early to tell how the Art II era will play out though. I think the Steelers were headed for their current mediocre stretch no matter which Rooney was running the team. It's just something they were due for.
