3 years @ 5.25m of David Clarkson was worth a 1st and a 2nd (24th overall or lets say on e 1st at 15th). Lets say Lucic is actually of value at 6x4M, 6 years at 3M negative value should be worth close to the same. Maybe I'm a little light with EDM currently at 6th but it's at a minimum only 9 spots off

It would take hugely significant assets to move up from 15th to 6th, for one, and for another Lucic is a long way off from being David Clarkson.

I've been following this contract closely for two years now

http://hfboards.mandatory.com/threads/lucic-bad-deal.2130707/

http://hfboards.mandatory.com/threads/one-year-later-the-lucic-contract.2402407/

I am not surprised, and I firmly believe a lot of the defenders at the time agree now as well.

The Leafs lucked out with Clarkson, Columbus did them a HUGE favour.

I doubt the Oilers will be as lucky.

To get rid of Lucic it will still cost you salary coming back and it will cost you a good asset going out the door with him.

What was Chiarelli thinking...

Or maybe, unlike most Leaf fans, he doesnt have a blind hate for all things Oilers and sees a future here.
He would be in an exclusive group of people including himself and Chiarelli.

I mean if you want to just not read what I actually wrote and have a closed mind about it go ahead. I'll repeat it one more time. Clarkson had 16M worth of negative value (3x5.25) Lucic has about 18M worth of negative value if his actual value is 3m per season x 6. At no point did I ever say Lucic was less valuable on the ice i just said contract included he is at best a wash to Clarkson

There are huge degrees of difference, your approach is far too simplistic. Lucic is a 40-50 point NHLer. Clarkson is on the IR the rest of his career.

In todays NHL without McDavid Lucic would be lucky to hit 30 pts. Face it your stuck with that contract.

I’d trade Beleskey for lucic in a heartbeat need some one to stand up and be a physical presence

This is why i stick to baseball forums. Hockey fans have a lot to learn about financial management and what an underwater contract means

Just curious if those #Oilers "fans" out there that are ready to ship Lucic to the moon are showing the same disdain for Ryan Johansen and Kyle Turris?
KT - 52gp 9g 22a 31pts ($3.5M)
RJ - 54gp 7g 29a 36pts ($8M)
ML - 58gp 9g 21a 30pts ($6M)
Next year Turris will make $6M...

What the heck are you talking about? He has been a 50+ point winger for most of his career. I agree he is overpaid and is having a brutal 2nd half but maybe have a clue when you make a statement like that.
If the Oilers can't make a halfway decent deal for Lucic I would suggest holding on to him until next trade deadline. He might play better with a full year of RNH and a decent system under a new coach.

Countdown to TradeCentre: What to do with Lucic? - Article - TSN

Saw this coming in the summer..... "Lucic carries a $6 million cap hit on the seven-year contract he signed with the Oilers in July of 2016. TSN Hockey Insider Darren Dreger said Thursday the Oilers knew the contract would be considered overvalued at some point, but didn't expect it to happen in just his second season."
Maybe movable in trade for Price? Habs were interested in Lucic when he was free agent and Oilers get their goalie.

I don't think Price at 10.5 million makes sense for the Oilers.

I also don't see the Canadiens taking that deal straight up and it doesn't make any sense for the Oilers to pay a huge price for a Price they can't afford.

Kings and Oilers swap 4th liners with upside. Oilers throw in their First as a sweetener for taking on the extra salary and term.

It's kind of a joke, I am wondering how real this.

Most teams, even elite teams, end up with bad contracts at some point. The sky isn't falling and the Oilers don't need to start another rebuild because of Lucic. Yes, his 60-70 points have pretty much turned into 30-40 points but there has always been more to his game than just those points. These panicked trade proposals where Edmonton is eating half his salary or give up first round picks just to get rid of him are a bit ridiculous. Forget the extra 3 million a year he is getting, he is still valuable member of the team going forward. Chia Pete just needs to be more careful with how he hands out his money from now on.

That is a laughable trade. Would that even work on a video game?

As teams value skating and speed more and more, Lucic is becoming less and less valuable. At that contract he is vastly over paid and no team is going to want that on their books for a player in decline. His intangibles are not close to compensating for that AAV. But I do think as the cash salary declines, he may be moveable for a team needing to add AAV for cap reasons. Unfortunately, his buyout down the road is terrible.

What was Chiarelli thinking...

The Lucic and Larsson moves both looked great last year when the two were credited with changing the attitude in that room from "guns blazin' looking out for me" to "team".

This year they look horrible because 1) no Sekara, no Eberle, Talbot pooping the bed and no adequate replacements. Lucic was on pace for his normal 45-50 points until Nuge went down and the season went south.

I'm not going to defend the decisions entirely, but things change quickly around here. Neither of those management decisions rank anywhere near the top of my list of bad decisions as an Oilers fan. I would hope Oilers would take a longer term view before packaging assets and eating cap with Lucic... I mean, what would be the point of that? Are they really going to find an RD worth paying this summer/UFA season? I don't see it.

Well, the Oilers are going to have to either eat some salary or take back an ugly contract.
Everyone knows this.

Lucic was actually having an okay season until Christmas. A stretch to say he was playing worth his contract, but he certainly wasn't playing as awful as most seem to think. Since Christmas, he has been at best invisible, and at worst a liability. The one positive is the interview he did last week where he admitted that he needs to drop some muscle so he can increase his speed. Shows solid self awareness, and that's something that a lot of players don't necessarily have. He knows what he should do to get better - whether or not he can do it is another question altogether. I actually don't think Chiarelli sells on him yet. I think he gives him a chance to adapt to the "new" NHL by changing his body shape and working on his speed this summer. Even if he drops down to 220 - 225, he will still be physical and strong enough to be intimidating out there, and if he can do that and pick up some speed, then he'll be far more effective.

Exactly...

First: he's still on pace for 42 points
Second: He's pointless in 11 games. Guess what happened 12 games ago? His centerman RNH went down. At that point he was on pace for 52 points. SAME AS ALWAYS.

If the argument is: Does Lucic drive a line? We can all agree the answer is NO.
But this is still a very useful player, even at $6M given it was a UFA contract. Would I rather 4.5? Heck yeah, but the only way to get a player like Lucic for that is to sign them long term after having drafted them. There are ZERO UFA examples of a player of Lucic caliber signing for that little.
