That's good, too, but that would only work next season.

not like we'll be any better with this forward lineup, and with Elias getting older and the possibility of Jagr getting traded or signing with a different team is scary, we would be near dead last without Jagr this season

One thing I disagree with is that us making or missing the playoffs is going to drastically change what Lou does going forward and that seems to be the reason why a lot of people want us to miss the playoffs.

I want us to make the playoffs so ****ing bad and I really think we can. Some of you say if we make it we'll just get smoked. Do you honestly think if that happens then Lou's moves would be very different than if we had missed the playoffs? I don't. Lou is going to do what Lou thinks is beneficial for the team no matter what.

Of course, I don't hate Deboer as much as most of you do. I don't necessarily like him either but I don't think he is as bad as most people make him about to be. If him being fired is why you want us to miss the playoffs then I disagree with that mindset but so be it.

If we get into the playoffs we probably do have bad odds but anything can happen. Goaltenders get hot all the time and we have an extremely good one in Cory. You never know.

It's not a case of Goaltenders getting hot, hockeyr5.

Cory has been relatively "hot" ever since he became a Devil.

It's the OFFENSE that needs to get "hot" if there is any hope of making something out of this forgettable season.

Basically. If they can score more than 2 goals/game, with Cory playing, the team can easily make the playoffs.

Scoring 2+ goals/game is problematic though with this crew...

Unlike many, I have not given up on the season. Despite our frustrating play, we are still in the mix with a lot of games yet to play.

But I will be pretty bent if we don't make a trade to improve the offense. And I don't mean a Steve Sullivan, or a proven but older guy, I'm talking young/prime under contract bona fide talent. And in the process the defensive log jam needs to be cleared.

Otherwise we are just spinning wheels as one of the worst teams in the league.

So I guess the popular opinion right now is we should be happy about being a fringe playoff team? In that sense, sure this thread is premature. We all knew it would take time for this team to gel, but how long is too long?

I agree that offense is what need to get hot but... lets get off the Cory high horse for a minute and stoop kissing his ass like its the golden ticket. Cory only become hot after NYE. 2013 Cory as a Devil was nothing to be excited about and he had his fair share of clunkers.

Also, I do agree that if Cory keeps playing like this, he should be the playoff goalie & we should do well (given the offense will pick up a bit).

Cory has been solid all year, aside from a few games here and there. Not trying to turn this into the goalie thread, just wanted to point that out.

Cory probably could have been in the talk for the Vezina had he played most games this year, but we can't score when he's in for some pathetic reason. He even improved his puck handling, and has even sent out a couple nice breakout passes.

He's been solid, yes but he didn't start out too hot and did have his share of clunkers. 2014 is when he really picked it up & took over the #1 spot from Marty. So what I'm saying is, yes he's been solid overall, but when he got "hot" was Jan 2014. Cory is also playing Vezina calibre hockey, he should IMO get in the convo at the end of the year if he keeps it up.

He probably won't play enough games to seriously be considered. It should go to Bishop I think. Cory should have been in the conversation last year, but an injury in the last two weeks of the season kept him from being one of the top 3 finalists. He probably wouldn't have beaten out Bobrovsky, but he likely would have been 2nd or 3rd with Niemi and Bob instead of Lundqvist.

Its not a guarantee that every single one of them will gain ground on us. I just don't understand the mentality that this team is complete garbage and we should wear bags on our heads at games. They're right on the cusp of a playoff spot and post-season play is still a very real possibility, we aren't Buffalo or NYI, so why act like it? They string together a 4 or 5 game win streak and the entire season turns around, its till a big possibility and a lot of people are going to look stupid if it happens and they were proclaiming all of this a complete failure on February 4th.

has this team even won 5 in a row this year?

They haven't even won four in a row, let alone five. And they've only won three in a row once.

I say trade all the veterans before the deadline and build up a nice supply of draft picks. The sooner we start the rebuild, the sooner we compete for the Cup.

This is not a typical year for the Eastern conference, especially involving those in our division.

Because the Devils remain close to a playoff spot, completely blowing it up isn't going to be in Lou's vocabulary. The Devils would have to be 10 points out for that old fart to even consider it.....

i'm not even asking them to blow it up.

i just want to ship jagr for a 1st. prefer to a "fringe" playoff team and then hope they miss the playoffs to get a shot at landing the #1 pick. (see the isles buffalo trade) buffalo will make out like bandits in that deal!

ship zidlicky for a 2nd rounder try and make it conditional on how far the team makes it.

how bad would we suffer on ice if we dealt these 2? replace zid with gelinas and jagr would be the only "hole" in the lineup. in that case it is what it is. its pretty sad right now we are relying on a 41 year old to lead us. i would hate to see him get hurt or see how much value he will have when he comes back from the olympics with his tank empty.

both players and both value listed is realistic i believe seeing that both were traded for similar packages recently.

get back 2 picks hopefully a top 15 and a late 1st early 2nd rounder. not too shabby for a team that didn't have a pick to begin with!

I think the point is with 25 games they still can. Considering that we have 10 teams within 5 points of each other fighting for 4 playoff spots, those 5 games won could be huge to get us in the forefront. I have to agree with his statement, it could change our season, morale and destiny entirely. If they string together a 5 game streak and get a ahead, we could go on an extended hot streak where guys gain confidence and with Cory being a stone wall, thats a pretty deadly recipe for any team playing against us.

We've won 3 in a row? When was this?

November 16-21 - Pittsburgh, at Anaheim, at LA...although they were kind of lucky THAT streak didn't get stopped at two.

That was our only sustained run of winning five out of six games. We had a much more mobile and offensively capable defense at that point (cough LarssonGelinas cough).

Is it overreacting when there is 25 games left, 3 points behind a playoff spot, Carolina and Columbus have games in hand, and the Devils continue to play the same way they have all season?

Sure we may only be 3 points out of a playoff spot, but in all seriousness, why would we expect things to change now when they have been consistently bad all season thanks to the coaching and GM?

I'm not expecting any of the teams above us to suddenly crap themselves down the stretch to allow the Devils to sneak in to a playoff spot.

This is not a thread for logical comments.

Lou needs to trade Jagr away for a first round pick, and then he can package Brunner and Larsson to get Eberle.
