The association football tournament at the 2016 Summer Olympics is scheduled to be held from 3 to 20 August in Brazil. In addition to the Olympic host city of Rio de Janeiro, matches will also be played in Belo Horizonte, Brasília, Salvador, São Paulo, and Manaus. All six cities hosted matches during the 2014 World Cup, with the Estádio Olímpico João Havelange in Rio the only Olympic venue not to have been a World Cup venue. Associations affiliated with FIFA may send teams to participate in the tournament. Men's teams are restricted to under-23 players (born on or after 1 January 1993) with a maximum of three overage players allowed, while there are no age restrictions on women's teams.

No US or England unfortunately. Who are the favorites? I'm interested to see who their three over 23 players are and what positions they play. Are they going to be world class players?

I couldn't find the exact roster, but I think many of these good under 23 players will be on it.

A lot of players you mentioned will be there. But this is an U23, so there a few more guys eligible.
I'd imagine the core something like this:

Timo Horn (1. FC Köln)
Jonathan Tah (Bayer Leverkusen)
Niklas Süle (Hoffenheim)
Mitchell Weiser (Hertha BSC Berlin)
Jeremy Toljan (Hoffenheim)
Max Meyer (Schalke 04)
Leon Goretzka (Schalke 04)
Johannes Geis (Schalke 04)
Maximilian Arnold (Vfl Wolfsburg)
Timo Werner (Vfb Stuttgart)
David Selke (RB Leipzig)

And of course a lot depends on who's going to make Löws squad for France this year.
Kimmich (Bayern), Weigl (Dortmund) Sané (Schalke) can all be added later on.

And then there are Jung (Hamburg), Kohr and Max (Augsburg), Younes (Ajax), Leitner (Dortmund), Bittencourt or Knoche.

And just reading all those names I'm a bit surprised myself. There is a ton of Bundesliga experience in those young guys.

Zlatan to Rio? He was saying he wants to go but I doubt it especially if he signs with a European club. But technically he is a free agent and can sign for a club whenever he wants

Ibra does what he wants. If we get knocked out of the Euro's early I can definitely see him going. Guidetti has said he wants to play in both tournaments as well.

Alexander Milosevic who will miss the Euro's due to injury should be fit for the Olympics and will probably be the third over-ager.

On the other hand, several Scandinavian clubs, including the likes of AIK and FC Copenhagen, have declared that they will not release players for the Olympics. Depending on how many Allsvenskan clubs choose to go down that path we might end up with an absolutely horrendous squad.

Dahoud will not play in the Olympics because M'Gladbach has qualifiers for the Champions League during that time. There will be not more than 2 players from any german team and also teams that have to play a qualification for the CL (Gladbach) or European League (Hertha, so no Weiser and Stark) will sent no players. For example Max Eberl already said that Christensen will also not play for Denmark.

Whatever for a german team will play in the Olympics, I do not expect them to play that big of a role. Also Germany will not use a veteran player or players that are now part of the team for the Euros. So no Leroy Sané, Julian Weigl, Joshua Kimmich, Mahmoud Dahoud, Emre Can, Julian Draxler and Antonio Rüdiger. There will not be much left to choose from.

Argentina have named 9 of the 18 man roster...the rest will be in the coming days just before they meet up on 4th of July.

Cristian Espinoza, Mauricio Martínez, José Luis Gómez,Gerónimo Rulli, Emanuel Mammana, Jonathan Silva, Giovani Lo Celso, Leandro Paredes and Ãngel Correa.

No real surprises but the one question mark is who will they take the striker. Between Icardi,Vietto, Calleri and good God no Simeone.

I'll assume the rest would be Battalla,Musacchio(if healthy) Kranvitter,Maidana, Lanzini,Cervi,Vega, Calleri and VIetto on bench.

Assuming that means players returning from loan as well as guys who've transfered on a permanent basis to new clubs; we could be picking our 2 per club from these players without using any of the overage slots:

FW/W:
Brandt - Leverkusen
Younes - Ajax
M.Philipp - Freiburg
J.Hoffman - Gladbach
P.Ochs - Hoffenheim
Selke - Leipzig
Gnabry - Arsenal

10:
Meyer - Schalke
Amiri - Hoffenheim

CM/DM:
LeGo - Schalke
Amiri - Hoffenheim
Geis - Schalke
M.Christiansen - Ingolstadt
Henrichs - Leverkusen
R.Bauer - Ingolstadt

LB:
Toiljan - Hoffenheim
P.Max - Augsburg
N.Schulz - Gladbach
R.Bauer - Ingolstadt

RB:
Klostermann - Leipzig
Henrichs - Leverkusen
Passlack - Dortmund

CB:
Sule - Hoffenheim
Ginter - Dortmund
Kempf - Freiburg
Klostermann - Leipzig

GK:
T.Horn - Koln

You also can take Tah, Sane and Weigl off that list. No chance their teams allow them to be in both tourneys regardless if they play or not. There is also that only two players per club agreement between the DFB and the DFL which makes things more complicated. And Hrubesch has indicated that he will mainly nominate players that were part of the team that qualified.

And while Volland is still 23, he is no longer a U23 player (only player born 93 and after). There are also further agreements between the DFB and the DFL: if possible no players that changed the club over the summer (Volland and Werner), no 2nd league players, no players from team that play in CL quali stage and so on. And Stendera also is not available after his knee surgery a month ago.

Source in German:
Das sind die Kriterien:

1. Keine Nominierung von EM-Teilnehmern

I'm reading that the situation is so bad at the AFA that they might not even send a team. What a disaster.

Well they now have a coach again for the time being.(let's see how long it lasts) and they named the team (unofficially). Most of the guys that should/could be on the team are not there. Leon,Dybala,Icardi,Mammana,Krane, or Calleri.

Really of the 18 man team, there's 2 maybe 3 players worth watching. This team will get destroyed. Not even worth posting the team.

Same could be said with most teams in the Olympics...

Olympics are not part of FIFA and therefore clubs are not required to make their players available. And there really is no reason for any clubs to make players available for most of preseason and the start of the season in most leagues.

Yeah, but even fringe players are not being able to go. Another, 3 today are banned from going (why name them if your not sure the clubs will release them?:faceplam:)

View how can't buy minutes at Atelti can't go...Callieri will take his spot. Shame was hoping he would take this opportunity to get some confidence.

Come to think of it, how is Correa allowed to go but not Vietto and even Krane? He's been used a lot more than both combined.

Maybe Athletico are more committed to letting Correa shine as much as possible to build on his greater hype in case someone comes in with a re****ed bid?
