No problem there in my opinion. Him staying and developing in a men's league elsewhere would be really good for us. If there's anything that can be seen from Russia right now is that their goaltender development appears to be ahead of North America. Leave him there for at least 3 years. When he comes over here he won't just be ready for a shot, he might be ready to step right in as a starter.I'd say yes but my concern with him is that he will be highly pressured to stay in the KHL. You draft him an it could be 4-5-6 years before he comes over.
The only issue I see with the Russian league and goalies is that their stamina doesn't seem great, which could in part be due to the shorter season. That said, I'm thinking a goalie of Askarov's ilk will get all the play he wants in international tournaments, so he should see a lot of pucks.
We have a good team right now, our prospect pool is as strong as its been in a long time, this is the perfect time to draft BPA and let the prospects develop in the system and overripen before being thrust into the fire. I understand our needs on wing, but we have a defense issue coming that could alleviate our wing issue. Klefbom/Larsson/Bear/Nurse/Samorukov/Bouchard/Broberg…..we have depth at a position that could easily be traded to help elsewhere.
I will say that unless Askarov falls though that I probably wouldn't draft a goalie this year if I was Edmonton.
