I've read some pretty strong critiques of Gunler, namely with his effort level early in the season. Doesn't that worry you guys or was that a false narrative? Looks like he's got a nice wrister with decent speed.

There have been some rumours of attitude issues, but not really related to his effort level, which seems pretty good. The rumours mostly stemmed from him not being invited to the world juniors or the Hlinka. Where did you hear the critiques?

The thing that people don't talk enough about is his vision. Watch the highlight video that @Soli posted. Those no-look passes are pretty good.

I know it's irrational but Eberle and Yamamoto both scored 42 goals in their draft year in the WHL as small RWs that went to Edmonton at 22. Jarvis scored 42 in his draft year in the WHL as a small RW. If he goes to Edmonton at 20 success is guaranteed.

FWIW - these are all from early in the season...these are from mynhldraft.com where I often go to track draft order and get some links on players.

Jokke Nevalainen -Dobber Prospects - Nov. 4th: "At times, he’s too passive on the ice which could make it seem like he’s lazy or disinterested. But he thinks the game at a high level and seems to think he can be effective with limited effort."

Tony Ferrari -Wings Nation - Nov. 4th: "His skating is good but not great, he could stand to be a bit more efficient with his stride. Overall, Gunler could be a prospect that falls, should teams find out what the off-ice issues are, but for the purpose of this exercise, his skill-level is undeniable and he deserves to be in this spot (ranked 7th)."

Scott Wheeler -The Athletic - Nov. 4th: "There is often good reason to doubt Gunler. He comes and goes, fading in and out of games. But he also scores. A lot. And from a raw tools perspective, there’s nothing to dislike."

Chris Peters -ESPN - Oct. 22nd: "I have a feeling Gunler is going to be one of the season's most polarizing players. He has the tantalizing skill set, has a tremendous shot and put up eye-popping numbers in Sweden's top junior league last season."

Corey Pronman -The Athletic - Oct. 15th: "Gunler is deadly inside the offensive zone, with a high level of offensive IQ and a hard shot. His skating is average, though, and he needs to become a better all-around player."

Thanks for that. Like I said, I don't really see a lack of effort from when I've watched him. And the skating thing reminds me of Draisaitl. He's a big guy, and lanky, so he's still getting used to his frame. His top speed is really good, although his first step and edgework could use improvement.

Scouching just released a scouting report on Noel Gunler. He does highlight Gunler's inconsistencies but also loves his shot, willingness to engage physically, offensive instincts, and overall upside. I believe he has Gunler ranked 11th on his list.

I highly recommend you check out more of Scouching if you haven't already. He's one of the more informed guys out there when it comes to prospects.

What does everyone think of picking Holloway? He's probably not the highest-upside option for us but he's fast, has good hands, works hard, and is good defensively. Player comparable would be someone like Chris Krieder.

Is it fair to say that 2020/2021/2022 drafts will be similar in impact to 14/15/16? Laf, Wright, Savoie and Bedard all look like above average 1st oa picks.

Those are the 2020, 2022, and 2023 drafts. The 1st overall pick in 2021 is projected to be Raty or Clarke.

My top-50 with write-ups for the top-31 picks:

________________________________________________________________________________
1. Alexis Lafreniere - The easiest ranking in my list. His blend of smarts, skill, speed, shot, and work-ethic is very rare.
________________________________________________________________________________

2. Tim Stutzle - The gap between the players in this tier are razor-thin. That said, Stutzle's skating and vision along with the fact that he's proven himself against men is why he leads this tier.

3. Quinton Byfield - For the first time, I do not have Byfield ranked 2nd. He had an impressive season, but he doesn't have the consistent shift-to-shift impact that some of the others do. He is young, however, and has lots of untapped potential as he still hasn't figured out how to use his size.

4. Marco Rossi - Rossi is right up there with Lafreniere for most complete player in the draft. He is an incredible passer and playmaker and is also a workhorse that is great in his own end. Brayden Point is a comparable.

5. Jamie Drysdale - Smooth is the word to describe Drysdale. His skating and smarts are both elite, and his defensive ability is great for his age. If he manages to bulk up, he's a good bet to become a franchise defenseman.

6. Lukas Raymond - I really want to rank Raymond higher than 6th. He's got a similar skillset to Stutzle plus a better shot. Yes, he hasn't had much opportunity in the SHL, but he's had the least impressive season out of the players in this tier which is why I have him here. Again, there is very little separating him — and the rest of the players in this tier — from the number two spot.
________________________________________________________________________________

7. Cole Perfetti
- This is where things get a bit riskier. All the players in the previous tier are ones that I see as safe bets to be 1st-line forwards or #1 defenseman. Perfetti has that similar offensive upside but his skating could limit him in the NHL. He also isn't as engaged defensively as I'd like and I'd bet he becomes a winger in the NHL.

8. Alexander Holtz
- Similar to Perfetti, Holtz has top-line potential but also has some question marks. His best asset is his shot but he leaves something to be desired in other facets of the game.
________________________________________________________________________________

9. Jack Quinn
- I'm a huge fan of Quinn, as the ranking might suggest. His skill, shot, and offensive instincts are all incredible, he's a good 2-way player, and he's got no glaring weaknesses.

10. Noel Gunler - One of the best pure goal-scorers in the draft. He's got to keep his feet moving at times but I do like his level of hustle and commitment. He's decent defensively, a good skater, and an underrated passer. Consistency is his biggest challenge.

11. Connor Zary - Nothing elite about his game but no clear weaknesses either. Motor, hands, shot, and passing are all very good. He also comes in clutch when it matters.

12. Anton Lundell - Very efficient player but I don't see the offensive upside to justify a top-10 pick. Numbers are impressive in the Liiga though.

13. Rodion Amirov - He's agile, deceptive, owns a good shot, and is one of the top players in the draft at driving possession. He could use to improve his speed, but he is a good overall skater.

14. Jan Mysak
- Mysak is a bit more of a north-south player than I'd like, but I really like his blend of skill, speed, and shot. One of the more complete players in the draft despite being one of youngest.
________________________________________________________________________________

15. Mavrik Bourque -
Bourque plays the game at his own pace, which is a very slow one. That isn't a bad thing; players like Leon Draisaitl excel at driving the play by slowing it down. Bourque is a good skater with excellent passing, shooting, and smarts. His point totals are crazy good led by a 7-point night.

16. Seth Jarvis
- I don't think he's quite as good as his numbers suggest, but he's very skilled and his skating is great to watch. I like his hustle and two-way play as well. This tier is also a tough one where the players are separated by very little.

17. Braden Schneider - I think Schneider might be able to step into the NHL in a 3rd pairing role next year. His defensive instincts are elite, and combine that with his reach, skating, and physicality, you get a great defensive player. I like his shot and while he isn't a flashy offensive player, he's a very smart and efficient passer.

18. Jacob Perreault - Perrault is an interesting one. His shot is among the best in the draft class and I could see him becoming a dangerous forward, but I have doubts about his ability to be a center in the NHL. Perreault tested incredibly well at the Top-Prospects Game in terms of skating. He was faster than Foudy, who I consider to be the best skater in the draft. However, he appears to be an average skater during games. Is this a bad thing, or does it suggest that there's room to improve? I don't know.

19. Jake Sanderson - Like Schneider, Sanderson is a defenseman who excels in his own end. Right now he is probably worse than Schneider defensively and lacks the physical element but he is younger and might have more offensive upside. Real solid payer but I don't think he's a top-10 pick like others do.

20. Dylan Holloway
- Slightly disappointing season on a very disappointing Wisconsin team. His speed, hands, and work-ethic are his calling traits. While he may not possess top-line offensive upside, he could become a dependable two-way top-6 winger.

21. Dawson Mercer - It is quite rare to see players of his age play in the WJC, and Mercer managed to hold his own. No stand-out qualities but he is skilled and fun to watch. I'm not sure I see a top-line player though.

22. William Wallinder
- Very, very raw, but his skating and puck-handling are insane for a guy his size. One of the younger players in the draft so there is lots of room to improve.

23. Yaroslav Askarov
- I'm going mostly on hype and numbers here as I am not a great judge of goalie's talent. He was incredible when I saw him at the U18s though.

24. Hendrix Lapierre - His concussion issues are the only reason he's in this tier. I love the way he plays the game offensively and defensively but he has more 3x more concussions than goals this year and that's very concerning.

25. Marat Khusnutdinov - I'm higher on Khusnutdinov than most. He's very fun to watch and it's even more fun listening to others try to pronounce his last name. Skilled, dynamic center with great skating, passing, and hands while being a very dependable two-way player. Lack of size and "The Russian Factor" are working against him.
________________________________________________________________________________

26. Jeremie Poirier
- Perhaps the most polarizing player in the draft class. His skating and hands are unreal, but his defensive play is a very real concern. His shot is great, his shot selection is not so great. Passing is nothing special. Huge upside, huge risk.

27. Tyson Foerster - One of the best goal-scorers in the draft. He's got a great release on his wrist shot and has a killer one-timer on the left half-wall. Skating is a weakness but he's got plenty of time to work on that. Foerster was a top-3 player at the Top-Prospects Game.

28. Kaiden Guhle
- Great skater, good defensively, decent offensively. I like his physicality but don't see anything more than a #3/4D, which would still be a great outcome at 28th overall.

29. Lucas Reichel - He has a real knack for getting in high-danger scoring areas. It is remarkable how many shots he gets from the slot despite playing in a men's league. He's a very smart player and a good passer. Needs to get stronger.

30. Roni Hirvonen - Just 5'9, but he's got the passing, hands, and anticipation to make up for it. One of the higher-upside picks in this range.

31. Justin Barron
- 6 months ago he seemed like a shoe-in to be a top-10 pick. A poor season and a blood clot has changed that. He remains a very fluid skater with great offensive instincts and could be a steal if he drops, however.

32. Jake Neighbours
33. Lucas Cormier
34. Zion Nybeck
35. Helge Grans
36. Martin Chromiak
37. Emil Andrae
38. John-Jason Peterka
39. Dimitri Ovchinnikov
40. Kasper Simontival
41. Alexander Pashin
42. Jean-Luc Foudy
________________________________________________________________________________

43. William Villeneuve
44. Ryan O'Rourke
45. Drew Commesso
46. Robbie Jarventie
47. Brendan Brisson
48. Luke Evangelista
49. Theodor Niederbach
50. Vasili Ponomaryov

Reading up on him, I'm wondering if taking a risk on a guy like Hendrix Lapierre could pay dividends. Those concussions are worrisome but the talent is undeniable.

Mavrik Bourque is a name to watch out for. He's a realistic target for us where we're picking. Right shot, excellent playmaker, great scorer, pretty good skater, and can play center and the wing. He kind of reminds me of a mini-Draisaitl. I have him 15th right now.

Here's a scouting report on Jack Quinn. This is why I like him so much.

Edit: I'm going to be so mad if he's drafted by a divisional rival, or, God-forbid, the Flames.

Recently completed a mock on another thread, pleased with the overall result and curious for other's thoughts. Goal was forwards with skill, certainly the biggest need in the system at this time.

:edmonton

1 (23) Jacob Perreault - C/RW - CAN - Sarnia (OHL)
- A marriage of need and best available at this point. Was hoping for Jack Quinn but he was long gone. With one of the draft's best shots and surprisingly testing better than JL Foudy in skating at the Top Prospects game weekend, this could be a home run down the road.
Hopeful projection: Top 6 winger/PP gunner

3 (85) Jaromir Pytlik - C - CZE - Sault Ste. Marie (OHL)
- Surprised he remained on the board, appears to have all the tools (size, skating, hands, shot, hockey sense, RH) and may be slipping a bit due to being older for his draft year and just ok production this year. This might be due to playing top line mins in all situations and constantly facing the best players on the opposing team.
Hopeful projection: Top 6 winger/3rd line center + PK demon

5 (147) Kyle Crnkovic - LW - CAN - Saskatoon (WHL)
- Very small but fleet of foot with great hands and shot. Based on reports sounds similar to Yamamoto in effort on the forecheck, which we all love.
Hopeful projection: Middle 6 winger

6 (178) Adam Wilsby - LD - SWE - Skelleftea (SHL)
- 19 yo Dman who absolutely lit up the Allsvenskan (4th in D scoring). Not a lot of info out there on him outside of crazy good stats this season playing against men. Rights are owned by Skelleftea (Broberg, Berglund fame) and will likely see some time there this season. Also considered RH double overage Dman from Finland Axel Rindell, who also put up great numbers in the Liiga, or RD Jake Ratzlaff, multisport athlete from Minnesota HS system, U of Minnesota commit.
Hopeful projection: bottom pairing puck moving dman + PP specialist

7 (209) Dmitri Sheshin - LW/RW - RUS - Stalnye Lisy Magnitogorsk (MHL)
- Another diminutive winger but VERY good number last year in MHL (near PPG) and tearing the cover off the ball this year in the same league. Overager, RH shot but plays off wing often, sounds like a Russian Yamo clone.
Hopeful projection: Middle six winger (or KHL likely)

Perrault's a solid pick at 23, and Crnkovic is definitely a steal at #147. Sheshin also looks like a good 7th round pick with those numbers. I dont know much about the others, but from what I do know it looks like a solid draft.

Edit: I just had a look at the mock draft. Perrault would probably be my 2nd/3rd choice. Mysak #1, and then Foerster/Perrault. All forwards with good shots, so we seem to be thinking along similar lines.

Thanks for the feedback. Mysak was the other I was strongly considering here. I see Foerster as similar to Perreault in terms of shot (both excellent) but his poor skating in comparison was the difference I felt.
