MLD 2020
The draft is done!

The draft will last 24 rounds. You must draft 2 goalies, 6 defensemen, 12 forwards and a coach, with 3 additional picks to be used for whatever position(s) you want.

A 24-hour clock for the first two rounds, then a 12-hour clock for rounds 3-6, then an 8-hour clock for rounds 7-16 and a 6-hour clock for rounds 17-20 and a 4-hour clock for rounds 21-24.

No trades other than initial trade position.

The time limit is 24 hours for picks in the first two rounds. If you miss a time window don't panic, just make up the pick ASAP. Or, you can PM your preferred pick to someone beforehand and they can make the pick for you.

Suggestion: POST A REASON OR STATISTIC OR DESCRIPTION WITH YOUR PICK to aid discussion and let us know a bit about the pick, as many may not be household names, especially from other eras.

PM the next GM after your selection. And please post a notice to that effect on the draft thread to ensure a smooth flow to the draft.

Any player from any league or era are eligible as long as they were not at all drafted in the ATD 2020 (that means add/drops are ineligible too). As soon as a pick is posted, the next team's clock will begin even if an ineligible player is chosen: the pick will simply be made up as soon as possible.

Player selection should be based on what they have done (the 'next best' draft, so to speak, the greatest all-time careers not honored by being picked in the main ATD 2020 draft), and not what they will do in the future, though it's understood that there is a bit of historical hypothetical projection with players whose careers were cut short by injury.

At the end of the draft a team there will be an add/drop period inwhich one could pick up an undrafted UFA and simply discard a draft pick.

The number of teams that make the playoffs will depend on the number that qualify for the postseason. To qualify, a team must meet this all-time draft roster condition: Have on the team at least ONE player from each of the following all-time hockey periods:

1916 or earlier
1917-1942
1943-1965
1966-1979
1980-1994
1995-2009
in 2020 (ANY active/nonretired pro player with 300-plus games pro experience regardless of when he began his career)

The very first game ever played in a top pro league defines which time period for the required condition (so, an eighties player whose NHL or SEL rookie season started in 1979 would meet the 1966-79 time period requirement).

On another front, there will be a regular season all-star team of 1LW, 1RW, 1C, 2D, 1G, and 1Coach voted on after the regular season.

An important rule to remember for those playing their first MLD:

I really hope that the MLD All Star teams actually happen this year. To the extent that the MLD is to get players ready for the ATD, IMO, the All-Star Teams are at least as important as the actual winners.

In the past, we had All-Star voting for top 6 forwards and top 6 forwards separately.

I would be happy to run the MLD All-Star teams, to take some of the admin burden off of theo.

Is the rule to take at least one player from every era (as defined here) just for playoff eligibility? I’m not super interested in playoffs obviously, so I’d personally break that rule to draft the team I like but if this bothers many people or is one of those “spirit of the draft” things I’ll suck it up (don’t want to draft active players for example)

C'mon, ... it's an ALL-time draft!

Consider all eras of hockey greats.

That said,... remember: You get three EXTRA/BENCH picks, so feel to be biased against a couple of eras and get them much later, in rounds 20+. You only need ONE from each era to be a worthy all-time great team! :)

If you draft the best available players, you're likely to end up with every era represented regardless.

All right, I'll take Jimmy Carson

Though later the knock on him was that he played slow and soft, Carson was actually extremely gifted. He was a very good skater despite a gumpy stride (though knee injuries robbed him of some of this quite early), with great one step quickness and ability to change direction. His shot was one of the best in the league, and the naturally intelligent Carson had great hockey sense of course. Despite being such a lethal shooter, he was also a really good passer and playmaker too. At least early on in his career, he was willing to take the body and throw his weight around when necessary.

Carson is generally maligned as a guy who didn't want to really play, but that's unfair. The circumstances of the Gretzky trade seemed to throw his whole career in whack. He was well liked by his Kings teammates and it probably would have been best for his development to continue playing with his friends Robitaille and Duchesne rather than being expected to replace Gretzky in Edmonton or having to play behind Yzerman and Fedorov in Detroit. Still, the numbers he put up in Detroit are quite impressive given the limited ice time he got and the general tough situation with wingers in Detroit at that time (and he rarely played with Yzerman or Fedorov even on the powerplay). Well, on this team Carson will get the opportunity to be the player he could be (and was even briefly).

This is a pretty nice summary on Carson: Looking Back: Former LA Kings Center Jimmy Carson

Drafted 2nd overall, Calder finalist, then 3rd and 7th in NHL goals his next two seasons, Carson's career sure looked promising. Then of course it began to unravel. He has 5.5 years of significant play.

Interesting pick.

The Granby Prédateurs are proud to select, from Burnaby, British Columbia, former member of the Canadian national team and an integral part of the ‘94 Stanley Cup finalist, Cliff Ronning.

I loved the little guy's compete level. Ronning was known as a "waterbug" who used his 5'8 size and hustle to slip hits to his 165 lbs. frame. He had good anticipation and vision. The juniors star was not supposed to be able to handle the rigors of the NHL and went in the 7th round because of it, proving GMs wrong by playing a 1000+ game career.

Hopefully will pick sometime today. I've had computer troubles and master spreadsheet of old drafts is just gone. Will be rebuilding that today

Maine selects Alexei Zhamnov, the NHL 2nd team all-star center and Lady Byng finalist the year he was 3rd in NHL goals and points. The 6'1 Russian won three Olympic medals, scored three goals in the 1991 Canada Cup, three assists in the 1996 World Cup. He had over a point-per-game average in his four seasons in Winnipeg, then went to Chicago as part of an unpopular Roenick trade, and six years later captained the Blackhawks for two seasons before going to Philly and leading the Flyers in playoff assists to a Game 7 conference finals run in 2004. He retired having scored 719 points in 809 NHL games.

latest

From the Oct. 15th 2002 Chicago Tribune article announcing Zhamnov as the new captain:
Not only is he the Hawks' top offensive center, he also is their top defensive center. Hawks coach Brian Sutter believes Zhamnov should have been a finalist for the Selke Trophy last season that went to the Islanders' Michael Peca as the league's best defensive forward.

Zhamnov wasn’t physical at all but he was actually pretty difficult to knock off the puck. Consistency and effort weren’t always where you wanted it to be, but that’s why a guy like that was picked in the 1000 range. There’s no doubting he was ultra talented. Really nice pick.

He had nagging back injuries and was a heavy smoker. Jets fans appreciated his skilled game but those in the Windy City wanted the 200+ pounder to use his size to hit.

He played a skilled game but was responsible defensively.

He had the talent to play puck hog but has said he was trained in the Soviet system of looking to pass to teammates first, admitting at times he should try to score more himself.

With my repick I’ll stick with centre Gus Bodnar

The 1944 Calder trophy winner had 4 top 10 assist finishes and twice led the league in short handed goals.
