The legacy of Henrik Lundqvist

You may say the offense was weaker, but he factually faced more chances and more high danger chances and still had better stats than Price.

Montreal dominated some of the games they lost in because Price was one step behind.

Price isn't the reason they lost. He played well. Lundqvist played exceptional.
Factually, Lundqvist faced weaker forwards taking weaker shots. NYR as well as almost every other team scored more than Montreal did the entire season, just as they scored more the following season. The idea that Montreal magically transformed into an offensive powerhouse for that one series is simply untrue. Nothing against Lundqvist, but the Habs make most goalies look far better than they are.

He's a great goalie and a Hall of Famer. The fact that he doesn't have a Cup is simply because the offense was never quite there for him. Add to that some poor luck and this is what you get. But it shouldn't diminish his standing in peoples eyes.

Turning 37 next year on a rebuilding team he would have to go elsewhere for a Cup. But there is no shame in it plenty of guys have done it

Don't worry about that. Henrik has plenty of shiny hardware.

All time greats who never won the cup. Do you view them differently because of that? Cause if you do, then It's safe to say you don't understand the concept of what a team game actually is.

This isn't Boxing. Golf. Tennis. There's only so much 1 player can do. If you watched Lundqvist throughout his career, you would realize the only reason why the Rangers even sniffed the playoffs was because of Lundqvist.

Your goal in this thread is very transparent though. You dislike Lundqvist and will use whatever you can as a crutch for your failed argument. Keep on hating, hater.
For "the best of the generation" one Vezina is pretty underwhelming.

Habs had their chances in that series. In particular the Pacioretty breakaway in the final minutes of the 3rd period of Game 5. Instead the Rangers score in overtime and never looked back.

Rinne, Bob x2, Holtby, Price, Rask, Miller, and Tim Thomas x2 are all excellent goalies and have had excellent careers. I would not call them "one offs".

This guy has a Vezina Too!

The consistency Henrik has had throughout his career is what makes him special, and deserving of the praise he receives from even our most hated rivals. (Or some of them, anyway).

A Goalie, whether it be Soccer, Lacrosse, or Hockey, isn't there to win games for his team. A goalies priority is to give his team a chance to win a game. From the moment Lundqvist stepped into this league, he has done just that. This track record is insane when you break it down and compare it to his peers over the last decade+.

The greats like Brodeur, Roy, and Hasek didn't have just a couple of solid seasons topped off with 1 - 2 - 3 stellar seasons. It was their ability to play at a very high level, year after year, regardless of how good or bad their teams were.

I’m reading this thread, trying to pick a side. I have no idea what this means. It’s just words randomly placed. Usually I’m pretty good at deciphering non-English speak. But I can’t figure this out.
Perception.

Sid is old trash and not the best in the league and a massive whiner which is on here on hf boards. Thats what I meant with "on here" etc.

You need commas and periods. But I think I get what you’re saying. And I disagree. I dislike Crosby as much as the next guy, but he has earned his stripes.

Here's what I wonder though, once the Rangers rebuild is done and if everything is done right they get to competing again and slowly climbing the ladder, would Lundqvist be ok being 40-41 year old backup to whoever the Rangers goalie of the future is?

Handsome son of a bitch with a huge schlong (thanks Spittin' Chiclets). Happy he's going to retire without a cup simply because it means the Rags never managed to get him one.

Probably one of the worst NHL tragedies (as far as on-ice, don't get all PC on me) of the past decade is the fact that the Rangers couldn't bring in a supporting cast good enough to win Hank a cup. The guy literally carried the Rangers for their entire playoff window and they STILL couldn't get it done. Played an insane amount of hockey at an incredibly high level only to be failed by his organization. Hilariously tragic.

I'm not sure he's HOF worthy. Sure, he's been an elite player for the past 10 years or whatever but he didn't manage to accomplish anything truly incredible in that window. One vezina, only 8th in wins all-time (will sit at 9th for a while once MAF passes him)... I dunno. The Rags will retire his jersey because they retire literally everyone but I don't think Hank is a guy we're talking about in 15-20 years. Trying to be as objective as possible.

Is Luongo HOF worthy?

I think both Luongo and Lundqvist will be inducted. I know the standards are very high with goalies, but there comes a time where you just have to appreciate the longevity these guys had.

Forwards are judged primarily by how many goals they score. Montreal's forwards scored fewer goals. They therefore had weaker forwards.

You seem to be having trouble digesting these facts, however they are facts.

Sure, Montreal had some chances, and I do remember that breakaway. Lundqvist was excellent there, no question. I'd guess you'd agree that Price was pretty damn good as well, which was what I originally was countering -- someone's claim that one goalie was far and away better than the other. That wasn't the case.

Good goalie, good career (international), he has had his moments in the NHL,
there have been seasons where he was the best goalie in the league, however....
some people here are saying that, Lundqvist has been the most consistent goalie
post lock out? seriously?!? - couldn't be more far away from the truth.

The reason (main reason) why King Henrik couldn't win anything in his NHL career
was indeed his inconsistency, he always (mostly) melted when the team needed him the most
all the migraine explanations...not saying he didn't have migraines, but....i dunno.

There are great goalies and there a good goalies, Lundqvist belongs to the latter.

What are you talking about?

His QS% and dsv% being among the best which is amazing considering he maintained that over 13 years. As pointed out earlier, the fact his GSAA is in another atmosphere compared to other Goaltenders speaks to Hank being consistently elite as well.

And melting when the team needed him most??? He more than likely has the best track record of any Goaltender in Game 7s and since 2012 he had won 15 of 20 elimination games with a .945 sv% and a 1.74 GAA. If anything his worse playoff performances came when the Rangers held a series lead.

Look at it this way: Over the last two seasons, Montreal is ranked 14th in Shots/GP. That's surprisingly good. But they're ranked 24th in GF/GP. That's bad.

Now, I recognize there's no 100% definitive interpretation of those numbers, but you can't simply ignore that kind of disconnect. Over two complete seasons, the Habs took a good number of shots, but scored a bad number of goals. Not just against the NYR, but against everyone. It suggests the Habs play a possession system that prioritizes taking a lot of shots... unfortunately, they don't have the shooters to convert them. Nothing wrong with the system if they could shoot well. However, they don't. So yeah, Julien has them firing lots of shots, most of which bounce off the goalie's chest.

To bring this back on topic, while Lundqvist was excellent in that series, he was facing a group of forwards that have established themselves as among the weakest in the league. Yes, Habs had some good chances, Lundqvist stopped most. But most of Montreal's shots reflected their poorer reaction/speed/accuracy quotient that's plagued the team for the last two/three years.

Goals saved above expectation is the number of goals a goaltender prevented compared to what an average NHL goaltender would have expected to have let in on the same shot type and location.
Here are the top 5 goaltenders over the last 10 years in Corsica version of GSAA (All situations, regular season). Some of it is games played, but it’s remarkable just how big a lead he has over everyone else. Even if you work out the per game average the only people who match him are young players like Gibson who are coming off a career season or two. Lundqvist has done it at this level for a full decade. Amazing.
Lundqvist 201.1
Schneider 98.1
Bobrovski 85.5
Halak 80.2
Luongo 75.3

Factually, for this statement to be a fact, you would need to have measured the quality of every chance Lundqvist and Price faced that series, and compare. Otherwise, you’re just making assumptions based on past performance.

Habs had a putrid offence and every game in a 6 game series was decided by one goal except game 6 which had an EN. “Thoroughly outplayed” is exaggerating by a lot.

I agree with your point but this series was definitely won by lundqvist. stood on his head.
