The Core's Greatest Moments

It might seem like an odd time to start this but it felt right to me. Lots of rumors floating around about the future of the core, and in the offseason people don't frequent the board as much or at least aren't as engaged. Also, things change in life and people stop posting so I thought it would be cool to start to gather a repository of the most special or impactful or unique moments of the last 15 years that these three have been together. Not sure how to make it happen but it would be cool if this could become a sticky thread that we can add to over time. It would also be cool for new fans to be able read through some of the memories that we all have as time goes on.

I view the core of the team as these three players. I know that most add Guentzel and others and there's no doubt he's now a key piece. But these three have been here together from the beginning save one season, so it just isn't at the same level for me. This is the championship core. I left Fleury off both because the topic is exhausting and because he is no longer a Penguin.

I certainly hope, at this point, that the story has a happy ending and all three can retire together. Just watching and observing over the years, and especially in the last couple of years, these three have a special bond that you only get after going through so many things together. Not to mention, they are still elite.

But even if it doesn't happen, and Letang or Malkin end up leaving or being traded, I thought it would be cool for us to gather some of the moments that we remember. Doesn't have to be goals or points, or a Finals game, it can be anything that was special for you or impactful. A play, a shift, a moment in a critical game, an insane pass, a hit; their most memorable moments. So many times we remember the big playoff games but not the times they shifted momentum during a critical point in a season. With that said, there's plenty of latitude so if you think it noteworthy, go ahead and post it.

That video had such a weird vibe.

It was also before Letang was core, too.

It wasn't immediately clear to us that Letang was THE #1D. He was seen as extremely promising and good much in the way that Marino is now. But I don't think it was until maybe 2010 or 2011 - post Gonch leaving - or so that he emerged as the franchise defenseman.

But I wasn't as attuned to Letang as you were so maybe I'm wrong on that point.

2010 was the head he became a # 1 D. The potential was there in 08 and 09 though.

This commercial is a great example because it reminds us that around the "Core" of this TV show, there are supporting characters and bit players that really became part of the Penguins organizational identity.

Fleury - quasi-core
Kunitz - quasi-core
Gonchar - quasi-core

Talbot
Army
Duperstar
Neal
Staal
Dumo
Horny
Kessel
Orpik as the core's frenemy
Malone who rightly chased the money and the nose candy but was a big part of the formative years

February 4th, 2009. Therrien was in the middle of the shit about to be fired, the team was listless and Crosby had not been playing well. Penguins were down 3-0 and Malkin put money down on a comeback. Scored two goals including the overtime winner. He was a monster. When he's going like that it feels like they can beat anyone. One of those signature games.

A couple goals that I'll remember..February 16, 2017 against Winnipeg. A crazy game, very physical. Stars were getting hacked and whacked all game. The Jets had already taken out a couple guys and it got very physical late. The kind of game a lot of stars in the history of this league have disappeared in. Ours seem to relish those games more than others. There were about 30 seconds left in OT and of course it's Letang to Malkin to Crosby to end it:

One of those statement games and statement goals from all three. I think at their height, when they decided to win a game it was over.

And the second one in Game 4 of the 2009 Finals. There was a lot of history here. They had obviously lost to a veteran team in 2008 and our core was still young and inexperienced. Detroit was up 2-1 in the series and you just felt history might repeat itself if the Penguins lost Game 4 and went down 3-1. They were down in the game and seemed a little dead in the water and then Malkin tore out of the penalty box on a breakaway and Staal scores right after. Then Crosby and Malkin on a breakaway and once again they were just determined to score. There was no way Osgood was stopping that. Another signature goal.

Malkin, Alyonka and Letang.

Letang carrying the team in 2011 when both Sid & Geno went out. I think that kept Bylsma employed for at least 1-2 years afterward.

Letang's appearance reminds me of the opening part of Back To School, where Rodney is showing the compromising pics of adultery to his wife and then gets to a pic and asks 'what's the the midget'.

Letang isn't a midget, of course, but his appearance, like the question, was just so perfectly out of left field that it completed the scene.

That video had such a weird vibe.

'Food Porn' was the most accurate description I recall.

EDIT: Alyonka holding a spatula saying 'tell me I did a good job'. :biglaugh:

First intermission, game 3, 2009 ECF.

The Canes, down 2-0, had played as well as they could for 19 minutes. It was 1-1, but the ice was decidedly tilted in the Canes favor.

Then, in succession, Sid and Geno scored.

3-1 Pens.

The interviewee was Joe Corvo.

I'll never forget the 'someone stole my puppy' look on his face.

First time I recall seeing Sid and Geno break a man's spirits like that.

Is it just me or was the 2008 team better and easier to root for then the 2009 team?

They were a much better team in terms of top 6 personnel, and Fleury's 07-08 stats were MUCH better.

Always wondered what happens if we've got a healthy Malkin after game 1 of the ECF. What does the head to head with Datsyuk look like then?

(of course, I'm sure some Wings fans wonder if a healthy Datsyuk could've been the difference against Malkin's line in the 2009 finals)

EDIT: 2008 is important in another regard . . . what happened with the team and especially Malkin when Sid was hurt threw Commissar Shero's Five Year Plan out the window.
