The case for trading Auston Matthews

Interesting concept, going for a Lindros type of trade for Matthews.

For Matthews?

You know, if I had a crystal ball and can see in the future that Luke Martin and Jake Bean are going to be just as good if not better and will develop good chemistry with Fleury and Pesce, yeah I'd do it.

But, I have no idea why Toronto would even be looking to trade Matthews right now unless he really wants to go play for the Coyotes.

It’s a mental exercise in doing a Lindros Trade, where they would want a #1 D as the center piece coming back.

If we're going to do a blockbuster like that, I'd much rather go with a Wentz style deal. Multiple 1st rounders, a marginal depth player for an elite proven talent on a team not ready to win now.

2 first rounders, a second, and a depth player for Tavares... Something kinda like that.

I feel like we have a core that can win for the long haul. The picks we'll have won't bring us the top of the draft player we need, so if we can use those to buy a sure thing... Do it

I get the big picture, but to me, what led up to the moment is irrelevant. They were outplaying the Caps, were up by a goal with 3 minutes left, gave the game away because of stupid plays and didn't even get a point out of it. It's completely deflating for me. It isn't the first, nor will it be the last time things like this happen so I'm sure the players will put it behind them and move on, but when you are teetering on the playoff bubble, these are points you cannot give away. They had a chance to get within 3 points of CLB (with 2 games in hand) and get further separation from Pittsburgh and they blew it.

Ok, now I'm done venting and am moving on. :D

That was me last night as well....I just sat there after being almost positive we'd win and then pretty sure we'd at least get a point, only to have that given away....and that's what that was....this game was given away, not by lack of effort but by stupid plays. That's got to get cleaned up.

Also, I felt the team, again, did a bit of a turtle in the last 5 minutes.

Good teams find a way to win. Bad teams find a way to lose. The canes culture is that of a bad team. That is what Dundon is tasked to change.

One big problem this team has is a lack of leadership. Who is the guy that is making sure the team stays focused on the bench? Who is the guy that goes out and puts up a dominant shift to get momentum back on our side? We haven't had that player since Brindy, and it shows.

I know a lot of folks here won't like this, but the guy who took this team and put it on his back during the playoffs was Eric Staal. He "beast-moded" every game. He scored, he played good defense, and he was overtly emotional. That last thing is what's missing from the vast majority of this team. Sure, Skinner get's his in every now and then, but there's no universal, "I hate to lose more than I like to win" to this team. Until that surfaces, they will never be winners.

Agreed. HUGE mistake getting rid of him. You simply do not let 1Cs leave and if you do you damn well better be sure that the replacement is ready. Rask isn't.

Problem is, we aren’t in the playoffs, now are we.

Nearly everyone here knows EStaal was among THE WORST at playing like he didn’t care in regular season games, so spare me this garbage.

His worst was 70 points a season eith the exception of 1 or 2 years. We don't have that. I'm not going to dwell on the past. But this team still hasn't recovered from losing him.

Recover from trading him yes I'd agree.
Do I think if he was still here he'd have his current contract and results? Signs point to no. Eric when we traded him isn't the guy who is playing for the wild he's the guy that played for the rangers.
Could have should have. It doesn't matter cause the Wilds Eric Staal I doubt we would have traded except for significantly more.

E. Staal likely needed the kick in the pants that the trade to the Rangers and his soft UFA market provided. Even beyond his numbers, E. Staal visually looked like a player on a downward trajectory. The explosiveness he’s played with in Minnesota was nowhere to be found in Carolina at the end.

Now, I do think that the Canes would currently benefit from having the 45-50 point version of in the lineup, but what would the contract cost have been? I’m a bit skeptical that he would have taken the pay cut he was forced to take in free agency to stay in Carolina.

Staal and Skinner sounded like they were about to burst out crying in the post game interviews.

I’ll post this with a caveat, because admittedly the TV broadcast may not have showed the entire exchange...but IMO one of the things the Canes need is a little more fire, attitude, whatever you want to call it. When the game was over, Staal was trying to talk to the ref, show him his bloody mouth...and it was almost a look of resignation. I would have loved to have seen him cursing, giving him some real shit, because as many of you have said, this went from 2 points to 0 and if that penalty was called, the game was basically over.

And Staal was kind of just “meh.” An eye roll. Nothing more. I’d like to see more anger. Nothing to lose at that point.

(Again...maybe I missed it)

That's all a smoke screen. Refs didn't lose this game. The Canes did. Yes, they missed a call. But a missed call shouldn't lead to a collapse like that. That ending was inexcusable.

I’m not arguing that. I’m arguing that the team (as usual, by the way) is charmin soft, and perhaps a kick-in-the-ass leader on the ice might help things a little bit.

Having taken 24 hours to process the shock of that ending, that was still one of the most fun home games I’ve been to in a while. The crowd was electric at times, there were highlight reel plays all over the place, and the ownership change created a lot of buzz. Maybe a bit of a feeling in the building that a page had turned.

And if not for that last 1.4 seconds, that was a hell of a game against a pretty good team.
